well I had some blocks lying around so I came up with a “chicks only” access doorway. On the top I have bird netting. This keeps the curious buffers out and provides 24/7 safe space for the chicks. I am all about the pecking order but until they size up it is not exactly fair. Hope that helps!
so the run surrounds the coop as one big cage. Rough dimensions are 20x20 feet and 8 plus feet high. No need to lock the sleeping quarters as the cage is more than enough as it has underground security as well.
For us each time it was a matter of curiosity for the big hens. Your always gonna...
Good morning folks. This CV19 has given people time to worry or hopefully get things done. My family is in our 4th year of raising chickens. Along the way we have had a couple random deaths and a culling or two. Nothing extraordinary except for the awesome egg production. We built our own...
Right. So I am one of those " I do not believe in watering" gardeners. As little as possible while they root in their new homes then cut them off. Over crowd planting style. Last year our summer was incredibly hot and hardly a drop of rain until end of June early July. I watered maybe two times...
The first year or two I would remove my run dirt and mix with plain soil for vegetable gardening. I would then put new generic soil in the run. I am starting to prepare for my vegetable garden now and am digging out the old and filling in with dirt from the run. I couldn't help but to think that...
Texas Natural non-soy - non=gmo pellets. When they molt I feed the game bird pellets to move through it quicker. I mean, being as organic as possible is the whole reason we have chickens right? Reading labels will keep ypu away from mainstream feeds produced by companies like Purina. May as well...
So I inherited what I believe are 2-3 day old ducklings that were rescued by another individual across town. Using websites it seems as if the breed is correct. They are in a coop within my chicken coop and doing fine so far. Thy climb!
Any tips or thoughts on these ducklings? Should I clip/cut...
Talstar is a miracle organic pesticide. Safe for humans and pets alike once dry.
Anyone ever try it or have conflicting information that would state not to use it in the run or coop if you could allow it to dry before girls go into said sprayed area??
We certainly fee lucky, or like "chicken whisperers" sometimes!
We also had one old girl spiraling a week before we got the chicks. After another week and a half she finally stopped eating and drinking altogether and last night I had to cull her.
You mentioned mellow flock. I was amazed that...
On a random whim my daughter convinced me we needed baby chicks a week and a half ago. My lovely wife agreed so we picked up 6 chicks to our flock of 7 ladies. I decided heat lamps during a heat wave sounded like a waste of money. I also decided that buying a"kennel" seemed like a waste of...
The effort involved does not equate to my ability to purchase a 50# bag for between 10-20 dollars. For a while I was planing my own wood chips and did a time and value ration. It is so much cheaper to buy it packaged. Obviously the bigger the package even better. Time is worth money too in my...
