Turkeys laying eggs for first time.

I have raised chickens for quite a while and am new to turkeys. These are just about 4 months old now, and really can't tell if they are male or female and dont' know when they will lay. I have searched online and found so many conflicting stories. Some say they only lay one and never again, so...

    Broody or Comatose?

I had a white Cochin who did the same thing, I was worried she was dying. I did put food and water near her and she did not touch it, so I decided to take her eggs and put them in the bator and hatch them that way. She still tried hatch other eggs, but I took them each day, finally she came out...

    Washing eggs

I also sell my eggs and I did not use to wash them, but since I sell to the same folks every week, I started to wash them. I have 9 hens in one coop and 8 out of 9 use the same nesting box, and they all have their own, lol, some do get messy. I go in my nest each day with rubber gloves and a 5...

    *** I Got A Broody! ***

I four roos and they service all my hens. So I never know what I am going to get when I hatch!! I have had three Ameracuna eggs and three different chicks, kinda the fun of it. I also had two broody hens at the same time, and they would take turns sitting on eachothers nest, cute!! Enjoy!

    Rooster crows ALL day now

I have four roos, and they crow all day. They start at 4am and the last crow is about 7pm. With the amount I have I figured it was in competition with eachother and they are in with their girls. I think it is also just a roo thing, they like to hear themselves talk.

    Whole flock dead!

I also wanted to add this; it may sound gross, but I have cats and I had read that used cat litter deters coon, groundhogs( I don't think they would eat chicks) skunks, opossoms. I bag up my litter and put it around the coop as a baracade in the back where I thought I might have problems. I also...

    Whole flock dead!

Wow I was so sad to read your post. I know how it feels to loose them, I lost a couple to dogs last year and one new chick to a snake this year! I also thought coyotes, but also a pack of dogs, coons, opossoms, and large rats can do that kind of damage as well. You never know what is roaming...

    HOT in Central Florida

We had a very hot summer last year and getting hot now (90 today). put out the large bottoms of planters to hold water. My chickens use it as swimming pools, they stand in them to cool their feet. I also have straw in just to keep the dirt from being too hot. Lots of water, air flow ( I have a...

Am I screwed? Hatching right now.....*updated with pics*

Hi, I open mine up each time a chick hatches and put them right into the brooder, I have been having good percentages. Also I agree with the others, walk away, I have had chicks take a day or so to arrive. Good luck!!

What baby chicks should be doing....

Hi, I have found that it has to a lot to do with the breed, some are more friendlier than others. I started with 6 week old leghorn/cochin/Ameracuna mix. The leghorns, forget it, not friendly run away all the time, they are now 2 years old, the few that clearly have the Cochin and Ameracuna are...

Dogs getting acquainted with chicks. What happened?

I have two dogs, a collie/lab mix and a yorkie. Each have killed a chicken of mine. I had no idea that would happen, since they were all brought up together. So I keep them all apart now, much to my saddnes. I can't let the chickens free range at all, we had to built huge chicken runs. I hope al...

    Little Giant Hatch Along

I bought a thermometer that tells the temp and humidity, and try to keep it at 40-50% and if it is too low add water and too high I open up one of those red portholes and watch the humidity drop, but really for the most part I did not have much problem at all, I just kept hoping for the best!!!

    Will these still hatch?

Hi, I have a Mama hen who thinks she wants to sit on all the eggs, and when I was away for 5 days, my Dad was watching taking care of the chickens, He did not want to interfer with the Mama and left her with the eggs. When I got back she decided she was over sitting on just left the eggs. I...

    Little Giant Hatch Along

Hi Everyone, I have a Little Giant bator, and last year I had no luck at all!! I tried 3 different times, and was so picky with watching the temps, humidity, turned the eggs, etc.... So this Spring I decided that I would just try 3 eggs from my girls ( I had previously bought eggs out of state)...
