Hi everyone! Here in VT it is currently -5 F and dropping. Low tonight is -16F with wind chill of -34F. I am new to chickens, and noticed as I shut my hens in tonight that my Welsummer had a slight lighter section of her comb. After researching it on here, I am pretty sure she has a mild case...
As a new chicken owner, I'm struggling with this weather too. I'm in Vermont where our forecast is for -18 degrees F tonight, with a windchill of -38F.
I have a heat lamp in the coop, but it doesn't clamp very well even though it's brand new, and I worry about leaving it on overnight and...
Glad to find this thread...just went out to check on my girls and lo and behold the heater had evaporated all their water again! I went to get their waterer and the most dominant hen pecked me hard enough to break the skin. I have washed it out and covered it in neosporin, but was afraid it...
Hi everyone,
Very new to chickens. Have been supplementing their sunlight by about 4 hours a day in the morning and hooray! they all started laying right around 20 weeks! (I have an Orpington, a Welsummer, 2 Ameraucaunas, and 3 Wyandottes.)
They all appear to be laying at different times...
My boyfriend and I are fairly new to chickens and raised 8 chicks this year, one of which turned out to be a Welsummer roo. We were hoping due to his breed he would have an ok temperament, and we could keep him...but he started attacking me right around 20 weeks of age a few weeks ago.
Today...
Using Windows 7, Chrome that is up to date, when I went to backyardchickens.com, I got the following:

Had some leftover quinoa with veggies in the fridge. Wasn't sure it was safe to feed to the chickens so I googled it. Delighted that this thread came up. I have Hopi Red Dye red amaranth seeds to plant next year but did not realize it's the same plant as quinoa.
Really great to see a thread...
I got my first chicks ever from Meyer Hatchery earlier this spring. They arrived on May 29th, at 2 days old. They're roughly 6 weeks old right now, and I am everything but 100% sure that one of the 2 Welsummers I ordered is a rooster.
Given the fox family living in the field next to my house...
So I am fairly new to chickens, having just gotten my first chicks in late May this year. I have eight 4 week old chicks. They are fairly healthy and happy although one does seem stunted in growth after having a prolapsed vent.
I went to a yard sale today where one of the things for sale was...
Yep, I totally agree. But the chicks are in one section of the basement and the sink is in the other, meaning you have to open a door before you wash your hands. So we have the hand sanitizer right there. I don't think it is a substitute for washing my hands thoroughly when I've handled the...
Not sure how to add to this gallery--would like to post my brooder. Adding as a comment but it should probably be moved...
After reading a few books and researching what makes a good brooder, I decided to go with a very large cardboard box. It was free, easy to set up and use, and could be...
