I don't know what you ended up doing, but I used drystall for my perch boxes, and found it to be extremely irritating when dry (the dust would give me a cough that would last a week, I had to use a mask until it started raining again) and on top of that, because this area is so humid (I live...
Is your friend in Langley by any chance? I'm wondering if she's the one I bought the eggs from, considering they don't seem to be very common and people get confused about them...
And here they are at 7.5 weeks. I have counted what I think are 7 pullets and 3 cockerels... wish I could have those kinds of numbers with my hatches of layers. Haha...
Mine aren't new layers, I don't have any mature roosters, and have plenty of places to go to get away from the others (they're actually all very well behaved and never bother one another). But if they're doing it just because they enjoy it, I suppose I can live with that haha. It's just...

I have this happen all too frequently as well. I read somewhere that it could be because they got scared in the night? I honestly have no idea, but I'd like to see what other people respond, so perhaps I can fix my problem as well. :)
I've done a few searches but didn't come up with anything relevant.
I have a few hens that enjoy sitting in the nest boxes for lengthy periods of time and not lay an egg. They might sit there for a couple of hours and then leave. Does anyone else experience this and know why it happens?
I found him crying on the perch the other day, barely moving, so I brought him inside and warmed him up. Looked like he was doing well, no stinky poop anymore, just normal. Eating, drinking, walking... 4 days later he passed away (yesterday morning). I'm sad, but I thought it might happen...
The lady I bought the eggs from just said EE, and I never saw her flock. Most of the chicks from that batch have whitish-pinky legs, so maybe a gene from the rooster? (She only had one rooster)
