    Sexing Easter Eggers

Thank you. This was very helpful. I always struggle with small combed breeds on determining sex until the tail feathers really start to develop, so this helping me decide if I need to pick up more chicks or not this year. Will check out my ees tonight to see what the ratio is looking like right...

Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I have also heard that lavender replies mites. I planted 8 lavender plants around my run for the chickens in hopes that they will grow into a hedge around the run. I love the smell of lavender and the looks of it. I will add a few plants next year to help it fill in. Some of my hens that...

Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I scrub my floors with the off brand pine sol from Kroger. It smells good, so flies seem to not like it. It isn't so strong that it bothers the chickens. You may have those biting blackflies up north though and I really don't know what to do about those though.

When to butcher dual purpose/ egg laying breed cockerels?

I have several too many partridge barnvelder roos and red sussex roos. Does anybody know when the ideal age is to butcher these? Most of the info I can find is on meat birds particularly, and I don't want to have them processed too young and not get any meat off of them or wait too long either...

Dog Breeds: Old vs New, Working vs Show- with many pictures

Alot of people don't realize how different golden retrievers are nowadays. Your pictures above really show it. I had a golden growing up who was one of the last old types. Deep golden color, 60 lb female and smart as whip. She looked very similar to the pic showed of the working golden. The...

Dog Breeds: Old vs New, Working vs Show- with many pictures

You are correct, if I can add to your post. If the breed clubs really cared about dogs welfare they would not allow puppy mills to register pure dogs. Many people care greatly about the dogs in breed clubs, but for the rotten few that don't it spoils the whole bunch.

Ohio bans exibitions, shows, and swaps

I'm a Michigander and was really looking forward to the Ohio National. I understand and support the ban, but it sure is disappointing to not be able to have that historic show. Hopefully the number of cases drops off considerably, so it won't be such a concern come fall. Does anyone know if...

Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

That would be great. I will PM you after our busy season at work. I work at Carhartt so it can be crazy right now. Everyone disappeared from the cities since people are sick of dealing with them. I read your updates on the legal situation. That is absolutely ridiculous. if you ever can...

Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Anyone else sick of the dark and the cold yet? I had to get in my coveralls this morning and hate not being able to run outside real quick to take care of the birds. Frozen water and frozen duck pond. The ducks walked out this morning checked the pond and walked back into the barn! I just left...

Predator attack... skull exposed... put out of her misery?

Those head wounds do indeed heal up. If it is financially possible for your I would recommend getting the wound closed up with staples from a vet. My hen that had a large head wound last Wednesday is now almost completely healed up with the staples and antibiotics. Hopefully you have a vet in...

    Changing regulations? No chickens allowed

That is really surprising. Are you sure that your house would be in the corporate limits of the village? I wouldn't recommend keeping them if they are illegal there. I know I would just be worried all of the time that someone would be stupid and take them away. I would make friends with as...

    2014 OHIO NATIONAL UPDATE

I didn't get there until Saturday afternoon.... We drove 23 all the down from eastern michigan and it took five hours! Man... they must have been good for the judge to buy them! Next year I am going on Thursday and spending the whole weekend. Hopefully I will have some show quality Campines...

Buttercup Hen Got Brutally attacked by Rooster on Wednesday

Thank you for the advice everyone. Lily is doing well. The antibiotics and staples seem to have done their job. None of the birds have gotten any damage on them since whatever happened to her. I keep giving that roo the evil-eye just letting him know that I am watching him. The one up-side...

    2014 OHIO NATIONAL UPDATE

Awesome show! I wish I could have gotten my hands on some penciled rocks, but I couldn't find any sellers. Oh well, there's always next year. Anyone know what the official bird count was?

Buttercup Hen Got Brutally attacked by Rooster on Wednesday

Oh I thought it should be 1:6 ratio for fertile eggs. I guess I got mis-information. I may have too, but I don't have the heart to kill him myself or quite enough evidence to prove it was him. I can't see the others doing that. I doubt it was a raccoon because it happened between 3pm and 5pm...
