    A Christmas Tragedy

So sorry to hear your story of the loss of Scooter. He died doing his job as a protector. RIP Scooter, and peace and hugs to the folks left to mourn the loss of his spunky personality.

Very pretty and SO LARGE!! What breed laid it? My olive eggers started laying a few weeks ago and their eggs are small....

An injured bat that landed on our patio, but wandered out where the chickens could get to him....

Winter coop lighting, what do you use?

I have a related question as a newbie chicken rancher....We have a small hen house with no pop door. My 5 ladies generally go into their secured run upon awakening. We have put some cool white christmas lights inside that go off around 0430. I've found them going outside in the dark and lying...

    Weird egg thing

Awww, I bet with some more patience and love they will settle right into the new home you've provided and start laying for you. Sweet girls. Mine do this occasionally and I don't find rhyme nor reason to it. I get a random rubber egg, then other days get shells so hard and thick I can hardly...

Linda, we are in Nederland, just a stone's throw from the LA border. I have a cousin in Shreveport (who recently started his own coop), and our first child was born on the banks of the Mississippi in Baton Rouge:) My little Swamp Baby.

[/IMG] Our humble version of the Wichita coop. My favorite part was re-purposing an old wooden shutter as their ramp. The girls enjoying their scratch on this cool Texas morning.

    Huntsville/Conroe, Tx.

We live in Nederland, down near Beaumont, and come up your way occasionally for Renaissance and such. Welcome to the forum!! It is hard to find people in your immediate area on this site, I feel, but I was able to find a Facebook page for chicken owners in my area for trading and selling...

    Chicken with no comb???

I'm certainly no pro, but I would say female easter egger. My olive eggers (blend of easter egger and a brown egg layer) have very small combs, and some have slight fluffs of feathering on their legs from throwback genetics :) She is a pretty girl and will hopefully lay some lovely eggs for you!

    Newbie

Howdy and Welcome! I live in Nederland TX and am new to the chicken farming as well, but here's what I have done to get going.... I wanted pretty eggs layers that would lay different shades of browns, blues and greens. Lots of research and looking online led me to the breeds I thought would...
