I have a hen that has this problem. I read this thread and decided to go with pulling it out. I got the 'kernel' out - it was about the same size and colour of a small corn kernel - but there was still yellow gunk in her nose, and I couldn't reach it with the tweezers. Has anyone seen something...
Would siding insulation work? Like if you cut the appropriate size of it and nailed it to the inside of the wall and installed a sheet of plywood over it so the chickens don't peck at it?
Go Jonsi! Incredibly happy that the one legged rooster is doing so well! Leo is doing great too! No longer needs a bandage, the scab has come off and the skin is baby-smooth! And the little guy has gained some serious weight! He's going on a diet when the snow goes away! PS, my high school has a...
Well, I know I'm going to sound stuck up, but you are sure it's a blood ring? If you can see the baby moving, my guess would be it is just the embryonic membrane thingy expanding around the egg. There is a fantastic sticky about hatching eggs by Pete something... Can't exactly remember the...
That's fantastic! Leo is still healing, but getting better! His scab hasn't gone yet because I couldn't get a bandage to stay on, so I let him go without one and he got diotomatious earth under the skin so it was raw for a while. But glad Jonsi is happy and healthy agian!
Also, thanks for the...
Leo is doing fantastic! He crows first thing in the morning, and is even trying to get friendly with one of the hens he's with! :D so I might get some chicks of his yet! His stump is already half grown over! I would love to let him outside, but for the fact that we have 3 1/2 feet of snow on the...
Well, the amputation went fine. Used an elastic band as a tourniquet, garden pruners to cut. Took the tourniquet off too early, so he bled a wee bit, but we got it under control, put polysporin straight on and bandaged him up. He ate like a champ almost immediately after! Seems to be doing fine...
Good Idea. I'll take pics of how we bandaged it because he only has about 1/2" left before his knee, and his leg is so small the two birds might need different methods.
We had no real tourniquet so we used an elastic band. Left it on for about 2 minutes before cutting with strong garden pruners (boiled and sharpened) but we took it off too soon (only left it on about 45 secs) so it bled a small bit, but corn starch did the trick with some pressure. Well we'll...
We tried cutting the tape in half and it worked. He is already using his wing as a sort of crutch and his appetite is back. Plan to change bandage 2 times a day. I am putting Polysporin Triple Antibiotic on the wound. Thank you GravelBeak, and sorry for hijacking your thread!
