Egg color is heredity (in the genes, so to speak) while taste and nutrition come from diet.

I get my pullets at Dutch Connection Farm near Glassboro dutchconnectionfarm.com for cold hardy breeds that are great layers.

That's a great idea!! Easy to attach the PVC to the chain link. Lightweight so it will be easy to handle. PVC has some great joining pieces to make fabrication a breeze. I hope you take photos as you do the roofing.

Topic of the week - Chicken run management

Well, if you are 1950 I have a few years on you (and DH has a few more than that!) Don't despair. There are ways to boost the shedding power of your tarp. When I first started with the tarp I tried using a stiff wire sub-strata but it held snow. It was flat so rain/snow just sat in the tarp...

Topic of the week - Chicken run management

I, too, have a tarp over my run that goes down one wall for winter protection from blowing snow. If you go to my coop and go to the bottom of the article there are pictures of the tarped area. I have had no trouble with rain or snow!

Topic of the week - Chicken run management

Because I live in a suburban development and because my flock has increased to 11 temporarily I clean my run twice a day and rake out completely once a week. I do use lime on the subfloor to neutralize any stray poop odors. I bed with grass clippings in summer and a combination of pelleted...

How long have you been chicken keeping? I am in Camden County (Blackwood area) and have had hens for 4 years. I just started 9 new chicks to have more eggs now that the older girls are slowing down. We have a small yard and a lot of hawks but I try to let my hens free range every time I...

Pictures are tough to get! The little ones are FAST and definitely not going to stand still. The faverolles are quite docile but with 9 babies it has been hard for me to get them all used to me. Usually I have added hens 2 at a time so everyone got a lot of petting and attention from the...

I will attempt to get some pictures. The chicks have feathers now and are flying! I must be vigilant since every neighbor has a dog. Guess I better find a good butterfly net! So far I have spotted one rooster in the group. Sadly it is one of the two Barnevelders. I REALLY wanted them to...

    Diary of a Mad HAtcher

I am in my 4th Spring of backyard chicken keeping. In the beginning I had a coop bought used on Craigslist for $25 with a run built by DH. At the end of year 2 DH designed and built my perfect coop and run (see Southern New Jersey Cluckingham Palace in the coop section.) In her second Summer...

Statistically I think this was a very good hatch. I chose cold weather tolerant breeds (and unusual breeds for this area) because I do not heat my coop. I will say that the easiest way to take baby pictures is to do it before they hatch and start MOVING!
