    Worried About Mama Turkey

Hi All So we had an interesting situation early this fall. One of our hens surprised us with a poult. We free range our birds during the day time, and allow them to either roost in the evenings, or pen them up for protection from predators. One of our hens had gone missing sometime in early...

    Hen & Tom adopting poults

Hi All Quick question here: So my husband is a special education teacher at a local high school and he teaches a life skills science class. In May, they incubated a few of our turkey eggs. 5 of the 7 hatched early June and we kept two poults and gave the additional 3 to a farmer friend of ours...

    Bantam Breeds in the Garden

Certainly a possibility. My only concern (as you noted) would be predators. We have farm cats nearby that roam around our property They aren't a threat to our mature birds, but I'd be concerned about the chicks. Certainly something to consider!

    Bantam Breeds in the Garden

That's great news - ill definitely use them more in the garden then. We fertilize with their poop that we put into compost over winter, but I didnt realize the fresh stuff was ok

    Bantam Breeds in the Garden

I would love a few tiny call ducks, just worried at how my larger drake would react. He's an amorous fella (to say the least), and I wouldn't want him to harm the little ladies when it comes time to breed!

    Bantam Breeds in the Garden

I thought the nitrogen could still burn the leaves when fresh? No?

    Bantam Breeds in the Garden

I hadn't thought about the scratching. Might be better then to just use my ducks!

    Bantam Breeds in the Garden

Hi All - My husband and keep a pretty large garden each summer. Last year, we encountered a large amount of cucumber beetles. These nasty critters feast on any type of cucurbits in your garden (squash, melons, cucumbers). Our Zucchini and Cucumber crops were heavily damaged. While we have a...

    New Tom

Hi there We currently have two hens and have been eager to get a Tom to breed them. I'm sure that the ladies will be a little bit territorial with the new guy, but do we have to worry about the same type of fighting exhibited between two males? Or will they adjust to him relatively quickly...

    Removing heat from Duckling Brooder

One more question while you're here! One of our existing ducks is brooding a clutch right now - the eggs are due to hatch this week. Should I also remove her and the ducklings from the drake after they hatch as well?

    Removing heat from Duckling Brooder

Even with nights down in the high 40's on occasion? My next question for you: We hope to integrate them with our existing flock of 5 ducks. Our drake seems to be a bit aggressive with them. Is it safe to start keeping them in the duck run with the others? Or should we seperate them? The one...
