Official BYC Poll: How many chickens do you have?

Are you supposed to count them? I have 9 pearl leghorn adults, with 22 little ones, 10 buff orpington adults with 34 little ones, 6 Americana adults with 14 little ones, 22 guinea adults with 73 little ones, 26 japanese banty adults with 40 little ones with some setting on who knows how many...

Pics of free range guineas and keets..

I always take them all away, they are lousy mothers, good hatchers but lousy mothers. Somebody needs to teach them how to count. They always seem to lose them

    Guineas ran away today!

http://www.gourmetfoodstore.com/specialtymeat/guinea-fowl-specialty-meat.asp Looks like they are quite pricey as food. I wouldn't mind selling a few for ths price! I have eaten them for years, all dark meat with a long skinny breast. Got tired of buying 25 every year when the price went to $3...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

The advent of Roundup ready corn has greatly changed feeding livestock. GMO corn has a protein content of 6% not the 8 to 10 of the old varieties. Resists roundup but lower protein was considered a good trade. They just add 48% soybean meal to get the right protein level overall for whatever...

Anyone Setting eggs on 4/10/12??? Want to hatch with me?

I opened the bator and took out 19 babies. Looks like I got mostly pearl white leghorns with 6 americana. Started out with 21 of each. Letting the rest of them set for today while I'm gone. If no more hatched today then it will be time to clean out the bator and put a new batch in tomorrow...

Anyone Setting eggs on 4/10/12??? Want to hatch with me?

Got 33 left after pitching 9. Last pitch actually started leaking a little bit. Some worried about contamination from it. Had one hatch a day early, hearing some pipping out of the others.

Do they always hatch their eggs?

In my experience, you can rob a few eggs at a time over 7 to 10 days and put these in the incubator. They won't abandon the nest that way. Helps to put a mark on the eggs you are leaving so that you are getting the freshest ones for the bator. The birds have hatched as many as 15 at a time...

    8 eggs in the incubator

I set 41 mixed guinea eggs at 10 PM last night in my new homemade incubator. First test of it.

Anyone Setting eggs on 4/10/12??? Want to hatch with me?

Yup, I found the same info. I have some Red Stars from McMurray that lay like crazy but they eat like crazy too. I was thinking maybe the ISA browns would be more like them. The Pearls lay jumbo eggs and eat less. Carcass is too thin to do anything useful with tho'.

Anyone Setting eggs on 4/10/12??? Want to hatch with me?

As a response to the ISA browns post: I have both of these breeds. Which way did you cross? Red rooster to white hens or White rooster to red hens? Maybe both ways would prove interesting.

Things That Chicken Eat That Surprised You

Quote: Mine dig the macaroni out of the slop bucket and eat it first. All varieties of chickens do this.

    Chilling before evisceration

There are only two of us. One collects and kills while the other scalds and picks. All go into the ice after that. Then we both start on the gutting and cutting. 25 birds takes about 3 hours. Not as good as the 2 minute team but we have and old plucker that only does one bird at a time.
