Pros: cute, productive, delicious eggs, great meat, easy to butcher/clean, low maintenance
Cons: males can get aggressive, nervous, smelly, high mortality in chicks
When you consider the fact that I only got them for meat and eggs, they are absolutely five star birds. Those looking for chicken-like birds will be sorely disappointed. These are not birds that want to be held or make friends. They're not very bright, but they're a good addition to the farm for meat and eggs when properly cared for. My chicks had a fairly high mortality rate, but that may have been a problem with the supplier.
Pros: Friendly, beautiful, great layers, great broodies
Cons: none
Love my buff orpington! She lays lots of eggs and is great! Only complaint is the frequent broodiness, but that can be a pro or con depending on the person.

Pros: Pretty, productive, sweet to humans, social
Cons: Can be quite mean to younger chickens
My red sex link is one of my favorite chickens. She lays a big brown egg daily. She's taken 4 days off in the 5 months she has been laying. She's nice to look at too, with the white feathers under the red! She's very social with me and loves to eat out of my hand and pester me for treats. I'm so glad to have her as a part of my flock!

Pros: Beautiful, friendly, good with other chickens, not as mischievous as my other girls
Cons: Hasn't laid an egg yet, somewhat aloof
If you like the look of wyandottes, you'll love the look of Barnevelders. My Barnevelder is a great addition to my flock. She's very quiet (but when she does make noise she honks like a goose-hilarious!) and sweet to other chickens. She is sweet to us when she wants to be around, but she tends to be pretty aloof and doesn't enjoy socializing too much. My only complaint is that she is the only one of my girls who isn't laying yet and they're 8 months old. Holding out hope for springtime, though! In all, I would definitely get this breed again and would recommend them to anyone.

Silkie

Pros: calm, friendly, curious, spunky, unique
Cons: jumpy
i love my silkie! She is cute and cuddly. the only con I could think of is that she is jumpy whenever you approach her because she can't see. She is an excellent layer and for her whole 9 months of living with me has only been broody once. RIGHT NOW.

Pros: docile, pretty, sweet and shy!!!
Mine (Daisy) is 7 weeks, 3 days old and she is great so far! Very hardy, sweet to my other chick I have with her, and CALM! It is such a plus to have a calm one because my other (Maisy) is super speedy and nervous.....I love my Daisy girl!

Pros: FANTASTIC layer, smart, social, relatively quiet
Cons: none
I had a production red named Penny for over four years. She was awesome! She laid big, dark tan eggs almost every single day from about 20 weeks old on. She laid in the hottest weather (upwards of 100) and the coldest (single digits and teens!). She loved to learn new tricks for treats. Had she not been killed by a predator, she would still be going strong with laying well into her fourth year! I strongly recommend this breed for anyone who wants eggs or just a lovely chicken in general.

Pros: beautiful, nice to other chickens
Cons: not as hardy to disease
I have had two Ameraucanas. I got the first in 2012, but she got sick and had to be put down when she was 6 months old and I never got any eggs from her. I got the second in June of this year and she is 11 weeks old. She was sick for a while with an inflamed and runny eye, swollen earlobes, and a runny nose, but it cleared up, thankfully. Overall, these birds are friendly and great pets, but they are not as disease resistant as I had hoped and tend to end up at the bottom of the pecking order.

Pros: hardy, sweet, quiet, great weed and grub eater
Cons: taking long time to get large
My chicken is beautiful and amazing. She isn't as big as her ameraucana and production red counterparts, so we are hoping she grows more!!! Cross your fingers for eggs!
