Black sex-link (also called Black Stars) are a cross between a Rhode Island Red or New Hampshire rooster and a Barred Rock hen. Both sexes hatch out black, but the males have a white dot on their heads. Pullets feather out black with some red in neck feathers. Males feather out with the Barred Rock pattern along with a few red feathers. Black Sex-Links are often referred to as Rock Reds or Black Stars. They are planned crosses, which are hardier and more productive than their parents' respective breeds. The Sex Link Hybrid is the result of crossing two purebred standard breeds. This hybrid makes for very vigorous chicks, rugged brown egg laying hens and good cockerel fryers. These are extremely high in demand from our Asian community. Black Sex Links lay brown eggs.

very nice birds
Pros: chicken-oriented, forms bonds with other chickens
Cons: none really
my black sexlink is very food obsessed, she loves her crumble. She has a few BFFs in the flock, Vicky, who passed away, Flo, and Phyllis. She likes humans, but is more a chicken "person". She likes the older chickens more than the annoying young ones. She is not that picky about what she eats, which is good. She is not vocal at all.

Pros: Good layers of large brown eggs
Lovely plumage
Great foragers
Very people friendly
Cons: Egg production slows down after 2 or 3 years
Can become bullies to other chickens
I've kept black sex links for years and I really enjoy them. I have had them go broody from time to time, but they haven't been very good mamas. I wouldn't recommend letting them hatch chicks.
Pros: Very productive hybrid layers
Eat less feed than heirlooms
Beautiful feathers and easygoing temperament.
Cons: Haven’t found any.
I have had Rhode Island Red, Buff Orpington, and Red Sex Links and the only competition is Red Sex Link. Black Sex Links are better looking IMO. Raised 25 from chicks to pullets, and sold pullets to two other families. They are very happy with them and word spread around. Now people are asking me when I will have more BSL pullets. Maybe in another year or two! Get your coop ready because otherwise what are you gonna do?

I have to agree, our 1.5yr old thinks there absolutely hilarious they pull on his pants and eat out of his hands where the other breeds are still hesitant around the kids, the most amazing thing is, they will follow our pup around the property when let out of the pens and while he does the digging, they do the eating.....Best chickens we have ever had (and still have)!

LOVE my black sex link Jolene- was very vocal as a chick, but as a 3 month old has become very docile.. curious, funny and loving breed

Here is what strikes me about your post. I have 8 chickens of various breeds which include one RSL. My chickens are about two weeks younger than yours and I am getting 2-3 eggs per day, ONE of which is the RSL. So there is the comparison of getting sex-links! I want to get a black sex link next year.

I've got 2 BSL's and they are fluffy and their feathers make them look fat(they are not) Very friendly , but very outspoken and loud. Good egg layers Except this month, their production is way down, 14 eggs in 17 days. The heat(90's) may be a factor.

Very nice looking! Great picture! Glad to hear that her being at the top of the 'pecking order' doesn't mean she pecks the other birds.

Absolutely a favorite! My traveler was an aweseome girl and greatly missed, i think they get overlooked alot- wonderful review!

Lovely bird, but does not look to be a BSL rooster - I would suggest posting some nice shots of him over on the "What Breed/Gender" forum so we can get a better look at him and help you sort out his identity.

Black Sex Link males are barred or cuckoo. The most common way you get them by breeding a barred/cuckoo hen to a red rooster. The females get the red coloring on their heads necks and hackles from their sire. The males typically hatch with a head spot, are black and develop barring within a week. Barring is always passed on to male chicks from the mama.

I think I may be getting a BSL but I'm in the suburbs, my neighbors are very close. Will she be too loud???

My black sex links occasionally allow me to pet them. Mostly they hover around my legs and then run away when i try and pet them, "is it food?" "is it food?" "is it raisins?" "don't touch me!!!!" "is it food?"

Thank you- she is quite the character and I wouldn't have it any other way! (she stole my husbands bran muffin from him the other day!!)

I had to give mine away last fall when I had a lung collapse. The short story is a fox thought they were tasty. I plan on restocking at the end of March

Growing up my grandmother always kept between two and three hundred at any give time. We never had any trouble with them, even with my handful of mutts running with them.
