The Ameraucana is an American breed of chicken developed in the USA in the 1970s. It was derived from chickens brought from South America (Chile) that carried the blue egg gene and was bred to maintain the blue egg colour gene of that breed. There is also an Ameraucana bantam variety and both the LF and bantam variety were added to the APA Standard of Perfection (SOP) in 1984. Recognised varieties are: Black, Blue, Blue Wheaten, Brown Red, Buff, Silver, Wheaten, White.

The Ameraucana is one of the few chicken breeds to lay blue eggs, another being the Cream Legbar, which also have an Araucana influence. The Ameraucana breed shows many similarities to the Araucana breed, such as pea combs and of course the blue egg gene. The Araucana however has earmuffs and is rumpless, whereas the Ameraucana has a tail and is muffed and bearded. Their earlobes are small and round, wattles small or absent, earlobes, comb and wattles are all red. Their shanks are slate-blue, (tending to black in the Black variety). In Australia and UK both Ameraucana and Araucana breeds are viewed as varieties of the Araucana - tailed and rumpless.

Less rare than Araucanas, Ameraucana are still considered quite rare. They are often confused with Easter Eggers (EE's are often advertised and sold as Ameraucanas), which can lay blue AND green eggs.

The perfect mid chickens
Pros: Docile
Good for both eggs and meat
Love the cheek fluffs
Cons: Not large eggs
Not a lot of eggs (Still good for eggs though)
I love americaunas, and they are definitely a good breed to get for eggs and meat. Very sweet when trained.
Lots of colors and once more, we love the cheek fluffs.
Great review, love it! Good job.
Love my Ameraucanas
Pros: Beautiful, friendly, adorable, gorgeous eggs, funny, curious, nice size.
Cons: Can be towards the top of the pecking order

Often confused with Easter Eggers.

Feedstores sell EEs as Ameraucanas.
Ameraucanas have always been my favorite breed. I have raised several blue wheatens, and currently have white and lavender. Have had both male and female, never had one I didn’t adore.
Purchase Price
$10, $19.95.

A True Favorite!
Pros: So adorable, super personable when raised from hatch, beautiful to look at and wonderful blue eggs to mystify your non-chicken friends with. A very intelligent chicken compared to many others.
Cons: None
I found a beautiful Easter Egger and dove into the history of the Ameraucana after. It amazed me that they were so sought after that shops used phony names! What is the wonder of this breed? I saved my pennies and shipped a few purebreds across the country and I am smitten. Beautiful funny intelligent birds who have become family overnight!

I am wanting to get a few pullets so the grandgirls can gather some colorful eggs. Do you know of a good place to purchase them?

I live in Northern Idaho and bought mine locally from a breeder near Spokane, WA. I don't know where I would get them online. From what I've read, most places that sell eggs or birds online aren't the true Ameraucana's, just Easter Eggers.
I'm having the same problem trying to find Aracauna's.

hardy

adjective, hardier, hardiest.
1.capable of enduring fatigue, hardship, exposure, etc.; sturdy; strong:hardy explorers of northern Canada.2.(of plants) able to withstand the cold of winter in the open air.3.requiring great physical courage, vigor, or endurance:the hardiest sports.

I love mine. My Roo jumps up to my bedroom window to beg for food and he will sit there and eat corn right out of my hand. I throw out treats and he calls all his ladies over to eat. He is very sweet and has never attacked me. They are very skittish as chicks, in my opinion, but mine are pretty smart and chill out as they age. My dog was chasing one of my hens the other day and she ran right up to my sliding glass door to be saved by us. The eggs are beautiful and my hens always flock around me. I love their muffs and they are a wonderful size. I have had a Roo that was mean and almost killed my pet goose. I don't know if I am am just lucky right now or what but my Blue Wheaten Roo and Lavender Roo are just wonderful. My last one tried killing one of his own chicks and mama had to put him in his place.

He ended up in our pot. He was my only bad experience with this breed of bird. I will probably always own them.

Ameraucanas do NOT lay a variety of egg colors. You're talking about easter eggers. Sorry you had a bad experience, but this review doesn't belong in this section.

We have White Giants , Rhode Island Reds , Brown Leghorns , a few White Brahmas , & Barred Rocks , about 6 Americaunas , 1 Buff Orington ( Clucky ) she is such a sweetheart !!! Loves to be petted as often as possible !! 1 Silver laced Wyendotte ( Speckles ) she is a sweetheart as well !!
And 2 Speckled Sussex , can't say enough great things about these 2 little Hens !! They are super friendly & curious about everything !! They love to be petted as Often as possible !! ( Salley & Sadie )
I love all my " Girls " plus I have 2 Indian Runner male Ducks , which I simply adore !!! Ozzie & Harry ! Which they are wanting some girlfriends !! They are 11 months old . And we are going to be on our Whidbey Island , WA. 7th Annual Chicken Coop Tour Sat. April 23 , from 10 am to 4 pm .

I can't believe out of 12 beautiful Ameraucana girls, seven years later and I only have 3 girls left my girls have laid a total of 5,407 eggs as of yesterday. My girls had one Buff Orpington, one Ameraucana rooster and a male and female blue & green peacocks in a large coup together. They were all raised as chicks and pea fowls together. We get 20-30 peacock eggs per year/season. If anything happens to my other three Ameraucana hens I will get 20 new girls, for I love this breed and their colored eggs.

How are they in cold climates? Do they need extra heat in the winter time? We moved to a property at the 3500 elevation level near the Canadian border in WA. Last winter we had about 3 feet of snow. Would they do alright in that environment?

I am looking at a local lady that wants to reduce the size of her flock and has quite a few pullets of different breeds available. She says that she has Ameraucanas, but after reading that a lot are actually EE's how would I tell by looking at them which they are?

@SHERRING7712
Go on the Ameraucana online websites - there are 2 Ameraucana clubs - and view the photos of the 8 approved colors. Also go on the BYC thread for "Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds updated" - you may get some breeder referrals for your region. If you are unfamiliar with the difference between EEs and Ameraucanas I would not purchase until completely assured of the difference. I waited -- did 6 months research before purchasing my first 2 Blue Wheaten Ameraucanas from an actual show breeder. And understand that just because an Ameraucana is one of the 8 approved APA varieties does not guarantee it will meet all SOP standards as breeding can sometimes produce not-so-perfect birds. That's why you need to go to a highly approved quality breeder to get true Ameraucanas. So far feed stores only sell EE chicks. Some private sellers list their EEs as Ameraucanas simply because they bought chicks through a hatchery or feed store that had labeled the EEs as Ameraucanas. Buyer beware. If you want your lady's birds critiqued on the BYC thread take photos and post them on the "Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds updated" and BYC answers will most likely quickly ID whether the birds are Ameraucana or not. Hope this helps you!

I have 5 total and I think at least 3 are male. 2 look just like the picture and one of the ones crowing looks just like the female pic with no muff! Do all the males have to have a muff? These supposedly came from a reputable dealer.
