I got two Aruacana hens and an Aruacana rooster about 2 weeks ago now.
They seem to be a little slow? Definatley not like any other chickens we've ever had.
They sleep ontop of the coop even in the rain and even though they have free range during the day, they stay in one corner of the yard...
How can I help her?
We picked her up on Tuesday and shes been wheezing since.
Shes separate from everyone else in case it's catching.
Is there anything I can do? Shes got a warm place to sleep and gets the sun in the day.
These chicks are 13 weeks old and I'm still confused as to whether they are cockerals or pullets?!
I'm pretty sure the one with the fire-ry neck feathers is a roo but sometimes I think???? maybe not?
Their mothers were brown shavers and an unknown father.
Any insight appreciated.
Thanks
Hi all,
I am designing a website for New Zealand Chicken breeders and chicken lovers to swap eggs and chickens.
I would like to have a list of breeds available in New Zealand, I have three of them but I need more pictures.
I need pictures of chicks, pullets and cockerals, hens and roosters...
I haven't had a problem with quitters before but the batch of eggs in my bator now has gone from 10 developing embryos to just 3 still growing.
What causes them to stop?
Did I do something wrong?
Can I prevent this happening to the next batch of eggs?
The eggs were given to me by a neighbour...
My big Barred Rock Roo - Tex has gone.
He lived a happy and long life and I hope he's walking better and is happier now.
All your babies will be sad today, but happy your're out of pain.
RIP Texy
Brand new chick has curled up right leg, wet feathers - haven't fluffed up and something distended from its butt.
It was out with its mother so we've brought it inside and put it in the bator to try and dry it out.
Has something had a go at it? Cat? The mother? Another hen or roo?
Will try...
one died yesterday and another one today.
They were both fine one minute, tired, lethargic looking the next, then dead an hour or so later.
I separated them eahc when I'd noticed something wasn't right. Put them back into the brooder to keep them warm and separate from the others.
The group...
I have a barred rock Roo, unsure of his age but he's a pretty big boy.
He's walking abit unsteady, when stopping to peck he sometimes has to stop himself from falling over.
When hubby tried to catch him he fell over trying to run away.
Last night when I went to check on the broodies, he was...
We hatched these in the incubator. I got the eggs from a local lady who said she had predominately brown shavers and a few bantams. She said her roosters were an araucana, a white leghorn and I forget the other
These guys are two weeks old now, I think, I should check the calendar
Any...
We have 5 3week olds and 10 2week olds and we'd like to know what sex they are!
How old before we can try?
Any hints as to what to look for?
They're barred rock crosses and pure breed light sussex.
Does an egg change appearance before hatching?
does it thin a little? get spotty?
I have one green egg that looks like it's getting spots - due tomorrow
I've just candled my second batch of eggs from my girls and both sets its only been eggs from 1 hen that are developing.
Its easy to tell as she's the green egg layer
Is roo not servicing the rest of his harem?
I have one barred rock hen almost 2years old according to breeder I brought her from.
She lays a fart egg about 20mm round about every second day. No yolk, but nice strong shell.
Is she ok?
Will she start laying big eggs?
Can I help her?
They get pellets, wheat, oyster shell, 'chook chow' (...
I have 5 eggs due to hatch on the 17th and I was given 12 light sussex eggs yesterday and set them along with another 6 from my girls.
So the new ones will still need turning but I'm supposed to not open the bator and increase the humidity.
I'm hand turning.
Whats the best thing to do? will...
