...the past couple of days. This morning, after I let every one out, Sophie (my mallard hen) jumped into the pond with one of the KC's. Then, Harry (mallard drake) stood on the side, seemingly watching over the 2 in the pond. Soooo... maybe things will iron out over time. *fingers crossed*!!!
Note: the KC's have only been with us since Monday (3 days). Am I not giving the situation enough time? Or do you think it'll just get worse? ...I think those are my biggest questions.
That's what I was afraid of. ...My current issue is that the ducklings keep chasing the mallards. My mallards LOVE sitting in their pond. But, the KC's won't let them OUT of the pond. Anytime either mallard comes out, they chase him/her back in.
IDK what to do at this point. I may have to...
Aaaand... another question: If it comes down to having a total of 4 drakes and 3 hens, including my 2 bonded pair of mallards and Swedes, is it possible or even suggested to separate the genders into 2 pens? Note: we already have 2 pens because prior to the KC's arriving, we had each pair in a...
The rescue didn't vent sex them. They were going by voice. But I think they are mistaken. I believe these are 2 drakes and one hen. One of them is VERY quiet. I have yet to hear anything from "him". Another is pretty vocal, but sounds to me a lot more like a drake than a hen. The third...
IDK.... I just went back outside to look at them and they don't look the colors that the photo enhancements made them. So, here are some untouched pics...
I got these 3 little ones from a local rescue over the weekend. She and I think they're KC's. But, not really sure the age. They were being starved by the previous 'owners' (if you can even call them that) because they didn't want them pooping in the pool. (GRRRRR!). Anyhoo... Any guesses...
Looking forward to feathers!!
BTW, we're experiencing pasty butt with 2 of mine. I cleaned them up this morning and it hasn't returned so far. I hope it was just the stress of relocating them and that they're happier and have better digestion at this point!! Actually, one of them has no...
Oh, okay. I figured their growth rate would be pretty close. Ducks grow CRAZY fast! LOL! But, at least with chickens, I won't have to deal with the water mess that ducks make. So far, the chicks have kept the brooder dry, unlike ducklings who, at times, made me have to clean the brooder...
There's a little girl across the street from me who is allergic to chicken eggs. And, like SJanay's brother, she can eat duck eggs without issues. Since we have ducks, I give them eggs whenever possible so this little girl can eat eggs. (So sad to see a little girl get SO excited about...
Thanks! :) And, yeah - seeing how fast my ducks grew was surprising. I imagine chickens are pretty similar in growth rate. I just take lots of pictures so I can remember. LOL!
@CTKen - a CD? Like as in a compact disc? Do you mean hang one in there for them to peck at??
Thank you to you and @sunflour for the suggestions!! I certainly don't want to allow any cannibalistic behavior to start in there!
Thanks! I wasn't sure. So, okay - 3-5 days. I was trying to gauge proper brooder temp. It's currently at 95 degrees. So, that seems okay. They're not huddling under the heat lamp side and not staying on the cooler side for too long; mostly to eat or drink or just run around, playing...
I haven't been on often. I was 3 years ago when I first got my ducks. I had 5, but lost one over the winter to illness.
Yesterday, hubby and I decided to get some chicks. We were at TSC picking up duck supplies and, of course, it's "Chick Days". Last year, we talked about getting...
PHEW!! Had a little egg-binding scare. Spot started laying again last week after a 10 week vaca (moulting). She has been giving us 1 egg a day since - and always did give us 1 a day since she started laying last December. Well, the day before yesterday, we got no egg. Yesterday: no egg...
