you are correct about where in the world you are whether a bird is called Pekin, Cochin, Bantam Cochin, Large Fowl, or Giant. Here in the USA most are Bantam Cochins or Large Fowl Cochins.
I have had 7 full winters and working on #8 in the coop. What I have learned.
# 1 There is a limit to the number I can keep healthy even though they are bantams due to air quality issues.
#2 The air filtration helps a lot. Can walk in and not see dust floating in the air. New air filter every...
I don't sell anything until I have hatched all I need for my flock. Some years that means I don't sell anything. I never sell chicks or eggs from my Blacks and Blues. I only sell birds after I have selected my keepers. I never ship live birds and sometimes I do sell eggs. I list them on my page...
Been about a year since I have checked in. Been spending more time on my own FB page Craigs Cochins, Cochins Across America, Cochins International. Been showing and made Master Exhibitor and Master Breeder in ABA and APA in Black Cochin Bantam. Glad to see some still use this forum. I was on...
The correct term is Large Fowl but that really does not matter. If it is not a bantam whether one calls it Giant, Large Fowl, or Standard it is all the same breed in Cochins. The Cochin organizations distinguish by Bantam and Large Fowl.
Cochins International will have the Western National show November 25-26 at Mississippi Valley fair grounds in Davenport Iowa. Show is Saturday and awards and auction is Sunday morning the 26th. Free to attend. Visit the Cochins International table and ask questions
If doing this over again I would have sealed the floors before doing anything else to make clean up easier. I bought a GQF 5 level brooder for chicks to use in this building. Found I don't use the lowest level since old knees don't live bending that low. With AI prevention in mind I think I...
Black Cock bird that was Reserve Bantam at show last weekend. Silver Laced pullets out in the yard earlier this summer and Buff Columbians hatched this year.
Last night my first fertility check hatched. Now to go pluck some birds and get the other varieties breeding too. Does not matter that I have done this for years. Nothing makes me happier than new lambs and new chicks hatching. I have set some to hatch the morning after my grandsons come for...
Laced Varieties of Cochins are in a rebuilding mode. I am getting better lacing on the pullets than I used to and a higher percentage of well laced birds. Now to keep the lacing and improve the type. I am doing some GL improvement also but not making as much progress yet. time will tell where we...
A couple of my Black Pullets and the pen of Silver Laced Cochin pullets I kept to breed and show this year. I have a page about my birds Craigs Cochins.
Haven't been on in a long time. I only breed and exhibit Cochin Bantams. Interesting conversation about the breed. Cochins were never bred to be production birds. To my way of thinking all pullets must lay at least 75 eggs and each hen at least 50 to be of any use as breeders in my flock...
