    Norwegian Jaerhon

I have been communicating with Norwegian breeders and they have provided me with the official Norwegian Standard for the Norwegian Jaerhon. Bjorn Netland, the original importer of the Jaerhon is working to translate it. I am so excited! We should soon have a guide to properly select our breeding...

I just got this from a Norwegian chicken Club and was very interested to see that the gray variety is now approved. NORWEGIAN Norwegian Jærhøne Country: Norway Very good egg layer Hardy, good flyer Comb: single comb Approved colors: brown yellow, yellow brown, gray Weight: Rooster: 1.75 to 2...

    Norwegian Jaerhon

If you cross the two types you should get both types after a couple years of inbreeding, but the results of the crosses might be difficult to predict. The homozygous dark would be eb/eb and the homozygous light would be e+/e+ so if you started with homozygous varieties then the F1 generation...

These are not my pictures. They are used for educational purposes only. The dark chicks are on the left side. The light are on the right. Males are on top for both colors and the females on the bottom. Adult darks have grey down and I have been told the lights have cream down.

The difference between the two colors of the Jaerhon is at the E locus which controls the base color of the chicken. It is the same difference as the difference as is found between the brown and light brown Leghorn. Most people can not accurately tell the adults apart. The surest way to tell the...

    Norwegian Jaerhon

If you have the dark variety of Jaerhon then the pullets will be dark brown and they may have a small yellow dot on the head or the head will be solid. The cockerals will be much lighter and have a large diffuse yellow spot on the head. The light variety chicks have chipmunk strips on the back...

My Jaers are a cross of three sources: a flock descended from Amyable's, Ideal Poultry, and my 4 original hens from an unknown origin. I keep my hens in two flocks with two roosters in each flock to get as much genetic diversity as possible. Of course all Jaerhons in the US are descended from...

I have 25 Jaer hens so I have lots of eggs, but it is so cold here this winter that I have been getting some frozen eggs lately so I wouldn't sell them for hatching until it gets warmer. PM me if you are interested when it gets a little warmer.

I really enjoyed meeting you Gloria Jean. I'm glad you like them. They should be laying in the next month or so. I hatched quite a few this spring and I now have a nice trio or even a quad for sale if anyone is interested. Mine are about the same age as your so they should be laying soon too.

I have never seen a NJ comb like that before! He's a cute bird but I hope you have another rooster for breeding.

    Norwegian Jaerhon

My NJ stopped laying for a few days after the stress of the chicken camp. However, they are back laying and happy to be home now. I can't say enough nice things about these little layers. Thank you again, Dr. Bjorn Netland for importing them.

My NJ were wild at the beginning, too. However, I prefer to call them quick and alert. Their survival instincts are good. Their quickness is what Terry Ryan wants when she teaches because if the chickens don't present a challenge the trainers skills don't improve. I worked about a month at the...

    Norwegian Jaerhon

Last weekend I had an interested experience. I supplied 20 Norwegian Jaerhon hens for a Terry Ryan Chicken Camp. This was a two day training camp at Cold Nose College in Murphy, NC for dog trainers to improve their dog training skills by training chickens. It was a lot of work to get the...

Dark and light hens look alike except Dark hens have grey and dark grey stripes in the down on the underside of their body and their bottom, while the Light hens are light brown in this area. Adult roos will have mainly white feathering, though patterned, but the Dark roos will have some darker...

I agree the description is not as detailed as I would like. Here are the links I was talking about. They are in Norwegian but you can use goolge translator to get a translation. The translations are not perfect but good enough to understand the basic meaning and the pictures are good...

Check post #199 on this thread for a translation of the Norwegian SOP. This is a great thread and well worth reading from the beginning to get some good information. The Norwegian do show their Jaerhons I will have to look on my other computer for the link to a picture I have of one of the...

    Norwegian Jaerhon

This is definitely a female chick of the light variety. She has a light spot on the head which might through you off, however the males have larger spots. Also the chipmunk stripes on the back are well defined which indicates a female. The males are much lighter with no defined stripes. What a...
