I did the same thing when I hatched out my first splash Ameraucanas! Oh no pink feet! Now they are the beautiful slate color they are supposed to be. Cute chicks. Wheatens were my first choice but I couldn't find anyone local to buy hatching eggs from and I was leery of trying to hatch out...
I am planning on putting that hen and rooster in the pictures above in a breeding pen with some of my other black hens. My goal is nice blues. I was considering getting some Blue Andalusions this year to cross with my Ameraucanas to to improve their lacing. Has anyone dabbled in this area or...
This is my splash rooster. Splash is a color I have a difficult time understanding being categorized as an EE. Shouldn't all three colors (BBS) be a part of the breed standard?
I love your birds. Did you have live chicks shipped? Did you have to order them pretty far in advance? He's not too far from me but I already have birds of Smith decent. I need to add new blood this year. Hatchibility was poor last year :-/.

That is a bummer. I used a breeder in Northwest Arkansas. I don't think she ships eggs though. Some breeders will ship eggs to you. It's always a risk the eggs will get damaged though. My Aunt hatches a lot of shipped eggs and all her hatches are varied sometimes they are great and...
I would check out the breeders on www.ameraucana.org first. I was lucky and one of the breeders listed only lived an hour away from me. I think a lot of breeders will ship eggs and/or chicks. But since we have had such a cold winter it might be better to wait until spring. It can be difficult to...
I have been dying to scratch my hatching itch as well. But right now its 13 degrees outside so I will be holding off until march or April. Seems like a long ways away right now though. Last year I was on my second round of set eggs by this time. The Farmers Almanac was definitely right this year.
Sorry for the confusion. If your eggs are truly blue. The color on the inside of the egg will match the outside. If it doesn't match the inside color you have a green egg. Does that make a but more sense?
This is so interesting Jerry! Didn't know that cross would create a sexlinked barred rooster. Experienced this myself last year yet didn't hatch enough go see the pattern. Thanks for the information.
I have not experienced this myself but is something I have heard in the past. Most breeders focus on one trait at a time - 2 max. In order to get good results. If the breeder is focusing on color and type, egg color may suffer. If the breeder is focusing on egg color type and/or color may...
All of my EEs lay blue eggs. But I think they are actually all NonStandard Ameraucanas. (2 ameraucanas crossed together whose offspring does not meet the SOP for the breed). You can tell if your eggs are blue or green by cracking open the shell. True blue eggs are blue on the inside and outside...
I can't remember if Meyer sells true Ameraucanas. But in my limited experience very few hatcheries sell the real deal. Or they will be deemed non-standard birds. Your chick will probably still have a beard and muffs, blue or green legs and lay a blue/green colored egg. It will still be a very...
I'm in agreement. I haven't been on the site for awhile so I'm playing a bit of catch-up. Your barred birds are beautiful Jerry! You do some very nice things with the Ameraucanas!
