I would buy the cubes and try it. I have been feeding mine alfalfa cubes for some time. If any are too big I can easily break them in hand, but the goats can do it too. Also the billy, there are no cubes that he will not demolish. Works great for me. You guys must have wimpy goats :) I...

In reality, the wisdom of the old is greater than the inovations of the youth. Quite simply, the old farmers had it right. You have a few chickens, and feed these chickens tablescraps and other things to keep them alive during the winter. When the spring, summer, and fall arrive, you have a...
I read some of the "experiments if feeding chickens" material on google ebooks. Basically, all that I got from it was:
It is benificial to mix at least some of your chicken/chick feed with powdered milk (mixed).
Even in the early 1900's it was unprofitable to raise chickens unless you could...
I did a search on google ebooks. "Chickens" (free). The search resulted in a lot of information on chickens, including "Feeding experiments with chickens..."
You can also get farming magazines from the 19th century.
Mine eat potatoes, and they have commercial feed available at all times. I tried to throw them uncooked potatoes once though, and they wouldn't eat them.
Caffeine is supposed to be bad for chickens...
But so are Potatoes, and I plan on feeding my chickens primarily Potatoes simmered over the woodstove. I'm just going to dedicate 1/8 acre to potatoes. Which makes 3,000 pounds total harvest. 375 saved to plant next year. That leaves 2,625...
That is a very good summer home brooder for chickens. It is safe and offers the chickens free range capabilities while they are so young. You must admit though that it is not a chicken coop. It is not where your chickens sleep at night (meaning that you have to physically pick up each chicken...
You are all entitled to your own opinions, as am I. I say that the old farm method; of 5 fenced in acres, a good dog and a shot gun, is a much more efficient farming method. Chicken tractors are pure hype with no practicality whatsoever.
I am just challenging the status quo (and like...
... he says that he trains his chickens, and gets a new flock every two year, nuff said. I agree that it all sounds very good. That the chickens are probably very healthy before they go to the slaughter. I see all of the positive comments on the youtube video. However, his method reminds me...
I have been scraping the bark off of the logs that go in to the woodstove everyday. I throw it on the deep litter, and the bark not only helps the coop smell better, but it also helps support microbial life forms, and the chickens actually eat quite a bit of it.
I live in MT, and lodgepole pine is free (for you to cut down). Soooo, this is how I would do it. I would build the coop out of logs 10 ft. 8 ft of each log is wall length, 2 feet is over hang (think lincoln logs). It would be built as an octagon (I saw your eyes roll! But I am serious)...
I am sure that in the previous centuries people fed their chickens whatever they had available... I don't think there were any bone growth problems. The "you must feed your chickens starter feed for x amount of weeks" hysteria... is mostly just status quoe, that nobody has any good reason to...
I disagree. I don't think that this system is practical at all. I think that he sells a lot of books, talks at a lot of conferences, and builds a lot of enthusiasm... but his system would bankrupt any farmer who tried it. IMO
I have been watching "Polyface Farm" with Joel Salatin. The chicken tractor just does not seem practical... at all. First of all, very few people actually own this perfect land that Joel is working with. Second of all, his ideas sound great on paper... but when put into practical work, it...
Are you trying to tell me that I need to know where I am going in order to get there?
I have two different goals... which are the same two goals of most everyone who breeds chickens.
1) To create a chicken who lays many good eggs for less feed. 2) (a separate goal, and chicken from #1) To breed...
