My little giant incubator isn't raising the humidity as it should be. I've got the fan kit (so its not air flow/circulation).
I put a sponge in a container of warm water in.. And nothing!!
Ive tried balling up paper towels, etc..
Its not getting over 46% humidity.
The humidity has been at 37%...
There's only 20 in the incubator, it's a little giant styrofoam incubator. I never opened the incubator up, but the temp steadily decreased after the power went out.. I have to say, these Little Giant incubator's do not hold a temperature very well.
Today our power went out for over 4 hrs, the temps in the incubator dropped to 70, I never opened the incubator.. Since then the power has came back on and the temps are normal once again.. But will they survive?
I'm no expert by all means, but I would think that 101 is too high. I've always been told that a consistent 99.5 is the best temp to hatch. these Styrofoam incubators are too inconsistent to play with temps that high.. it's better that the temps drop a bit lower than your target temp than to go...
I bought the same LG model a few wks ago along with the egg turner (from Tractor Supply) and what I did was just fill all 6 channels 1st then added my eggs. My humidity hasn't dropped below 33% since I've began the incubation (8 days ago).
From what I've been reading, on day 17-18 when you go...
A few days ago I started my post about the recent raccoon attack on my small backyard flock; you can see all the details in the link below https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/861669/raccoon-attack-last-night
Here's my question: Since the Rooster was killed will it be a bad idea to introduce...
I just let the possum go a few mins ago, I have no reason to kill it b/c i'm sure as slow as they are it wasn't him. but if i'm wrong we'll never really know. he was in the cage for over 12 hrs so I'm sure he'll be steering clear of the area for awhile at least.
I'm going to try it again...
...is there any chance the chicken killers are OPOSSUMS ????
Here's what I know so far, see if anything points to possible OPPOSSUM vs RACCOON
* I never did see other Coons (besides the 1 that I Killed in the Coop that was eating the eggs from the nesting box)
* I found 1 dead chicken...
I'm sure he'll eventually get the bait.. but it'll be his last meal if everything works as it should. Now if tomorrow I wake up and see the traps been robbed of food and door's still open then I'm just going to the local general store and buying a good one.
Oh i'm pretty sure it's all my fault that they were even attacked .. I'm really good about closing the door usually, but that night I think i just forgot! i actually forgot they'd been let out earlier that day. the coop is almost guaranteed predator proof (just user error this time)
i'll...
My trap sucks, I went out this morning and found the tuna can cleaned out and trap door open.
Yesterday when I set it up the door trip wouldn't work correctly and I was just hoping i'd get lucky and they'd do alot of moving around to set it. Apparently while sitting around in my garage I tossed...
I agree, stabbing at him isn't at all what I am wanting to do. It's the best I could do in the heat of the moment last time. This time around they'll be in a cage where I can either choose 1 of 2 ways to kill it. Drowning is starting to sound better, it's just my own personal fear to die of...
Drowning is waaaay too inhumane for me..I thought about a hammer and a 1 time ping to the head but I couldn't get to him easily and I'd be needing a clean pair of underoos if he lunged at me in that tight little spot i had him him.
I was just wondering if anyone had a way to easily end him...
I can't use my shotgun, or rifle to kill these coons once I've caught them in the trap; so what's the best method of quickly putting them down?
Last night I had to use a filet knife that I taped onto a 6' piece of PVC pipe I had laying around. I wasn't happy to use this method but it was all I...
Oh I know I'll get one in there.. I wish I had more than 1 large trap but I'll just try it for the next few nights and I'm sure I'll round up at least 1 more and hoping the whole family.
Good point on them being starved for food.. Didn't think about the CRAZED motive but thats it. (it seemed a bit more vicious than any coon would do) but the pack of 3+ is strange anyway.. I've personally only seen 2 at most at the same time.
I wouldn't think they'd be traveling in packs...
Well, I found the 2nd chicken --
I'm blown away at how far apart the 2 dead chickens were laying.. over 200 yards apart.
So it's obvious that there was at least a trio of raccoon's. I got the Egg Eater and dropped it by the 1st chicken body I found.
