So, after having had chickens for a few years, a few days ago we ordered twenty turkey poults from McMurray. We've been reading through the Storey's Guide to Raising Turkeys and have found it to be quite useful, but I was wondering if all of you have any advice. We ordered 10 Giant White, 8...
Whew!
It's been well over a year since I last logged in here. I doubt anyone remembers me, but I used to be quite active.
When I first joined, we had five gold sex link hens and about 25 Ameracauna/EE's. We're now down to one gold sex link hen (one of them died earlier today after a long time...
Well, we live about 65 miles away from you in IN. Hey there!
Last winter, our girls layed their eggs sometime in late-morning, and we didn't get their eggs until late evening. Our temps are about like yours, at about anywhere from 10-30 degrees, sometimes much lower. If it's 35 degrees OUTSIDE...
I've been following this thread off and on, just haven't posted anything.
I'm so glad you found Lenore, and that she's doing well now. She's such a cutie.
-As long as you're watching her, a little time outside wouldn't hurt her at all.
-How old is she now? She ought to be okay without a...
I wouldn't keep more than one roo in with 14 girls, if you're worried about aggresiveness. Try and spot out which one is the least agressive, and I'd keep him. If the agression continues after he's the only one in the flock, you could always just seperate him, even if he's with them during the day.
Yeah, sure. Try putting golf balls in the nesting boxes (I'm assuming you'd want them to lay there. ) It really depends on the chicken, but they should get the idea pretty quickly.
Did I answer your question? I was kind of confused as to whether you meant when or where.
Absolutely!
We love Christmas lights. Ours get put up around Thanksgiving and get go on at the very end of November, on my birthday actually. I actually hadn't thought about putting them on the coops...But now we'll have to! Should be fun.
Our two roos start crowing when the sun just starts THINKING about showing its face at about 4:30 AM, and crow throughout the day until it gets dark. Sometimes one will crow, and then the other, and it'll be back and forth like that for 5 or 10 minutes. We call it the crowing wars.
I really wish I could help you out.
Personally, I'd take one in a minute. Don't think my dear old parents would appreciate that, though.
I hope you can find homes for the pretty fellows!
And I hope your headache gets better.

Whew, I was thinking the same thing. That's A LOT of chickens!!
It all depends on what people in your area are willing to pay for fresh eggs, I think. I'd start higher at three dollars or so (that's what we get for eggs my dad brings to work!), and if people don't buy at that price...
