Looking for poultry/pets judge for SW Iowa county fair

Thanks! I have given the board the APA judges, and will look up ABA. I think our challenge is that we have always used the same judge to judge the poultry (including ducks/geese) and also the rabbits. But, we'll give it a whirl. Thanks again for the reference to ABA!

Looking for poultry/pets judge for SW Iowa county fair

I have found a listing of approved judges for APA, but don't know if any of them will respond for a county fair to judge our poultry show. Do any of you know of any other associations that I might get referrals from for 4-H judging? Our Extension Office wants the superintendents to bring a new...

    Exhibition cages for shows

I am the poultry superintendent for our county fair, and we are in need of expanding our chicken housing. The Fair Board is hesitant to spend very much money, so I'm looking for the best prices I can find on exhibition cages. The closest we have found are #1 and 2 at...

Pretty, but we don't know what breed she is! :-)

PS She usually holds her tail more upright than this, and she LOVES to fly (is good at it) and perches up higher than the cochins.

Pretty, but we don't know what breed she is! :-)

This is Jenna, who hatched about 6 months ago (spring, 2012). My daughters wanted silkies and we couldn't find a breeder locally that had any available. So, I was at the farm store and bought 6 chicks from the "assorted bantams" group that came from Estes Hatchery. My daughters are the...

    The EE braggers thread!!!

Awww...I'm sorry to hear about the possum getting your rooster! He was probably trying to protect his hens, doing his job. When I see people post pictures of "cute foxes" and "cute raccoons" on Facebook, I just cringe. Watching a fox run down the road with one of our chickens in its mouth...

    Cochin Thread!!!

Thanks! I found contact information for Annamay and the Millers, but not the Churches. I'll try contacting all of them. We wouldn't mind driving 4 hours if the chickens were what my daughters were looking for, though. :-) Toni

    Cochin Thread!!!

We are looking for a cochin bantam rooster, and live in SW Iowa. My daughters have a red hen and a partridge hen (cochin bantams) and show them in 4-H. We have 3 separate coops, and also have Welsummers, Marans, Ameraucanas, and Olive Eggers. All of our chickens have names and are pets...

Frizzle cochin bantam roos we are considering buying...quality questions, looking for advice! :-)

Maybe you can help me with a genetics question...I am into horse color genetics so understand some of the talk, but haven't researched chicken genetics. If you have time to help with these questions, I'd love the input! :-) If a chicken was a result of a frizzle to frizzle cross and got the...

Frizzle cochin bantam roos we are considering buying...quality questions, looking for advice! :-)

PS Also, does this bad feather quality look like it is environmental or due to moulting, or genetic?

Frizzle cochin bantam roos we are considering buying...quality questions, looking for advice! :-)

My daughters have two cochin bantams that won Grand and Reserve at our county fair, and they want to hatch chicks to show in next year's fair. We are looking for a rooster to purchase (they really want a frizzle for some reason), but we live in a very rural area and the closest we can find are 3...

Chicken with sores at corner of her mouth...Pox or Heat?

Is anyone else seeing chickens get sores at the corners of their mouths during the heat wave? My daughters are afraid of wet pox, but as much as they have been panting, I wonder if it might be from the panting. We have a fan in the coop, but they go under the coop during the day so it must be...

    white spots on comb

Oops...the post above should have said that we had a chicken with a similar looking group of white spots appear last night. We had an appointment with the vet for a horse, so took her along. Did you ever figure out what caused your chicken's white spots?

    white spots on comb

We had a veterinary appointment for a horse, so just took the chicken with us because we needed to know if it was infections due to an upcoming show. My daughter has been excited all winter/spring to take 4 chickens to the 4-H Fair, and so we didn't want to just "wait and see," and either be in...

White spots on my hen's comb (PIC)

Did you ever figure out what caused your chicken's bumps? We just had a similar looking group of bumps appear on one of our EEs, and noticed that the only pictures that came up from a Google search were also pea combed chickens. I just posted about our results today in another thread. Here is...

White dots on comb...have seen pictures here, but no definitive diagnosis. So, here's a picture of o

Last night, Cloud had little white dots in the creases of her comb that looked like tiny little eggs. This morning, they have spread and are more like clumps of chalky stuff. I've seen suggestions on similar pictures for pox and also favus, but nobody has posted back about what it turned out...
