I just moved into a house and the homeowner has two chickens and one Guinea. She didn't want them so I decided to keep them. I found out that the homeowner built a coop and the chickens didn't want to live in it. So they decided to sleep in the tree above the coop. They are Semi-wild because...
I tried to introduce my BO chicken to flock last night after she had successfully raised chicks. I live in a suburban area not needing anymore chickens, I purchased meat chickens (Cornish rocks). I noticed she was no longer interested in the BIG chicks. I took her out after 5 weeks. Last night I...
I came to BYC today for this reason. I now have someone who can relate to me. My GSL has been aggressive with me but I don't let her get away with it. Yesterday I went out to check on them and I went to pet her and she PUFFED UP and was like BACK OFF and bit me. YES! I have plenty of marks on my...
Thanks everybody! Hey Danielle27, I have 10 hens that are 19 weeks. I am currently waiting for 9 to lay. I cracked open that little tiny brown egg this morning for breakfast. It had the cutest little yolk in it! I can't wait for more! I love BYC!!!
P.S. Have you ever heard of afternoon layers?
I have been reading this thread since I first got my chicks. I have been dreaming about fresh eggs. It took such a long time BUT IT WAS SOOOOOOO WORTH IT!!! One of my 19 week old RIR was acting really weird today while free ranging. She went in the nesting boxes casually every 10 minutes just...
My 18 week old BR out of the blue goes into nesting box 2 times in 15 minutes while free ranging. This has not happened before. I am wondering when we should expect eggs from her. She has not squatted yet. Thanks!
My Black Australorp has her tail down. She always had it down since she was 6 weeks old. What I am reading is that it could be internal or because she is low in the pecking order. I have not found anything that matches this case. I feed the yogurt frequently. Thanks!
I am planing on getting a rooster. I want to know what breed to get. I LOVE the BO breed. I have never had a rooster. What do you recommend. I also need him kid-friendly. What do you think about EE or BO rooster? I would also like to hatch chicks too. Thanks!
I am amazed how much poop there is in the nesting boxes just over night. They are not laying yet. I do not want them to be discouraged to lay in them because of the poop. Also I don't want them to think that that is where they sleep.
My chickens have been sleeping in the nesting boxes every night for the past 2 weeks, ever since I introduced them. I do not want to have to block off the nesting boxes because I do not want to have to move the the cover in the morning. The sleeping beauties are 16 weeks old. From what I read...
My chickens are 14 wks. old. I am new at chicken keeping. I would like to know what behaviors to look for in my chickens when they are about to lay an egg. I read that chickens pace when ready to lay but is there something else to look for?
Thanks!
