We are so grateful for our Silkie flock as they provide us with everything a chicken can provide! Fluffy pets, broody mommas to grow the flock, beautiful small eggs, and delicious meat for the table.
If anyone has photos of their Silkie or Silkie cross meat birds, post them! I love explaining...
We have now fully dusted the girls with pyrethrin three times, each at 7-10 day intervals, and there has been no change in the lice infestation. I'm starting to get concerned.
We tried some pour-on Eprinex for cattle (1/2-1cc per hen), but this did not work either. I'm reluctant to try it...
I'm a small-scale producer, so I really shouldn't have experimented... but I wanted a safer way to brood chicks than the 250W red heat lamps (I am terrified of a barn fire--it borders on neurosis!).
First I bought two Brinsea EcoGlow 50s, plugged one in to test out on a batch of 40 Silkies...
This is a public service announcement since there seems to be a misconception surrounding coccidiosis.
If you have a typically healthy flock that is in contact with the ground and they mysteriously develop diarrhea all over their back ends, gather some poop and take it to the vet for analysis...
I just wanted to chronicle and share the story of getting our chicken coop from neighbors down the road, with the help of family and friends.
Our neighbors down the road had an extra building on their property that they wanted to get rid of, since they saw it as an eyesore. It had previously...
So for incubation techniques, I have tried a Genesis Hovabator (crappy) and broody hens (amazing but unreliable). I'm really interested in cabinet incubators, but they're definitely not in the budget anytime soon. So I've been thinking about building my own incubator!
Unfortunately, I am...
I am building a pallet coop for my 9 Silkies (and 2 mutt bantams), but as I got going began to wonder about the ventilation... do Silkies need a different amount of ventilation than other chickens?
I was planning on having half of the front side of the coop be hardware cloth, as well as having...
I went out to check on one of the pasture pens yesterday and found this girl like this. She had recently laid a normal sized egg--possibly her first--and was hiding in a corner. I isolated her with food and water, but she is not interested in eating or drinking and seems to be having a hard time...
CURRENTLY NOT SHIPPING EGGS AT THIS TIME
These eggs are F1 from our Ameraucana rooster over a flock of Easter Eggers and a few brown egg layers. There is excellent fertility and we have not found one non-fertile egg from this flock. Possible fathers are a Blue Ameraucana, a blue Easter Egger...

Right now we have five of our 4.5 month old started Easter Egger pullets for sale. Assorted feather coloring.
They are $12 each at this age and will lay blue, green, or cream colored eggs.

Since bringing home a batch of chicks who were carrying a heavy load of cocci, we've been having huge cocci problems, even in winter!
We do practice deep litter, but I've had to clean out all the coops multiple times as I worry about the cocci buildup.
Every single batch will do okay on...
I know this sounds stupid, but I can't seem to figure out which are the blues and which are the blacks in my flock. I understand blue genetics, I've seen both colors of birds. But I saw a photo of a bird that I thought was blue was captioned with "black" the other day, and now I'm questioning...
So I tried to introduce my two adult roosters today through the fence. It was all going well, they were sort of challenging each other (false tidbitting) and puffing up their hackles but not really doing much. I went inside for about a half an hour. When I came back outside, both roosters were...
Why did I think that the Genesis 1588 was a forced air incubator? Hm. Now I feel stupid. But here's my problem...
My last hatches with the thermostat set at 99.9˚F have been too hot and have shown all the signs of being too hot. I finally purchased a Brinsea spot-check thermometer to double...
It's hard to believe that my babies are already 6 weeks old!
I know that you can sex ducks by listening for the quack or other honking sounds in the ducks and the peeps and silent hissing from the drakes. So far, only one of my Rouens has quacked when I've picked them up (at 3 weeks old), and...
I recently hatched out some bantam eggs and, since my incubator's on the fritz, the hatch didn't go so well. I only got 3 bantam babies, one that I had to help out of its shell. They have lived with their LF brothers and sisters since day 1. One of the babies (not the one I helped out) died...
These Easter Egger boys are all splash with beards and muffs and pea combs. They are beautiful young cockerels and will grow up to be handsome adult roosters. Some have slate legs while others have green legs. A few have yellow legs. Adopted as chicks from a local woman doing Easter Egger...
Is the process the same as with a hen?
We recently moved coops and the flock is currently locked up for the day so they can adjust to their new home. One of my young roosters hopped into the nest boxes as soon as the hens left and is snarfing up all the eggs. Do you think he may just stop...
Got 6 of these little fuzzies at TSC and theoretically they are 4 weeks old today (assuming they were day olds when I adopted them). They are so cute I can barely stand it. Much cuter now that they're outside and not splashing water all over their brooder (yick). Glad we got their messy wet...
I have had my Cornish X on a strict diet since they were 2 weeks old (12 hrs on, 12 hrs off, with some empty food dishes in the middle).
At 2.5 weeks the smallest baby hunched in a corner, fluffed up, and refused to eat or drink. I didn't do any special nursing other than to dip its beak in...
