I don't know what else to call it -- a couple of the chicks have a bit of yucky on their bottoms -- not pasted, just yucky. Is this common and harmless, or could there be something wrong -- and if so, what can I do to fix it?
None of them are acting sick, or even lethargic -- and they all seem...
I'm now the proud first time owner of my very own flock of chicks!
They were shipped out yesterday, and arrived to day -- all, knock wood, very perky and apperantly healthy. A couple of them went straight to the feeder and began eating as soon as I put them in the brooder box, and it only took...
Ok, I placed my order for chicks, and got a very mixed group -- this is my first attempt at chicken keeping, and I wanted to figure out which breed(s) would work best for me (the ALL looked really neat and attractive -- it was like picking out your favorite flower...which is why I got so many...
I'm getting my order together and am wondering about adding one of these to my intended flock.
I decided to just order chicks from Ideal to start out.
Which would be better for my situation?
would need to stand confinement well and be hardy, economical
have good, consistent egg production...
Ok, I promised myself (and my husband) only utility birds for our flock. Then I ran into trouble with my son, who was rather upset that the chickens would just be for "usin'" and not be pets; then our toddler decided that "chicken" would be her first animal word (which was a small tragedy --...
I found a really cool new horse forum that just opened up; since there seem to be some horse lovers on this board and some chicken lovers over on that one, I thought maybe the good folks here who are into horses would like to visit them, and maybe invite the chicken lovers from there over here...
After reading quite a few reviews of different hatcheries and doing some homework on pricing, etc. I've found that two factors seem to come into play:
1)some breeds are better from certain hatcheries
2)it's better to look for a hatchery that's close = less transit time (hopefully) for the...
My husband decided on consolidating the housing for our pygmy goats (4 -- we just got them last month -- they are so cute!) and our soon to be chickens (a dozen give or take -- hopefully will get them this spring). They'll be sharing the run with each other -- 200 sq ft -- and the goat shed and...
Pros/cons of each of these two breeds?
We've decided on a flock of primarily Barred Rock, Speckled Sussex, and Brahmas, with some Buff Orps and Aussies for variety, but also wondering about these two breeds as well -- picking chickens turned into too much of a candy store option for me after...
We're going to get chickens, and how many should we, could we feasibly keep?
We live in town and have a 80x200 yard, and plan on a 10x20 coop with about a 10x20 permanent enclosed run which they will stay in with free range in the yard for periods of the day when we can supervise.
There are 5...
My family and I are going to be getting chickens for our backyard. We do have a healthy and diverse population of predators in the area; breeding pairs of red-tails, grey owls, foxes, coyotes, raccoons, oppossums, rat snakes, rats, and a smattering of dogs and cats (some folks like to let their...
We have 5 pups left from the original litter of 7.
3 females (one tri-color, 2 classic black/white) and 2 males (both black/white). Whelped on 6/8/08, first shots and wormed 7/26/08, available now. They have been well socialized with other animals, children, and are beginning to be taught...
Hi, new here.
My family and I are considering a backyard flock. We would like to raise dual purpose birds, primarily for eggs.
Here's our situation: we live in a small city/college town and have a large back yard (about 80'x200') that's fenced in (all but one section is 6'privacy fence, one...
