3 hens, no eggs for the past two days :( Either they're hiding it somewhere else, or they're really mad at me for taking them all the time! Hahaha Time for some early Easter egg hunting!!!
I have a question. How can you tell between a catʻs kill and a mongooseʻs kill? My sonʻs roo, Nutz, was on a tie out for a couple hours while my son cleaned and repaired his coop. My son fed Nutz, then went to the store and came back to find Nutz gone. All he found was feathers, his leg...
Update: From what I was able to gather, avian pox is a contagious viral infection and not affected by antibiotics. It lasts about two weeks and does not occur suddenly, it's a slow acting thing. Cleaning the feeders, waterers, and contact surfaces with a dilution of bleach & water will...
Question: Do we have to isolate the hen from the rest of the flock if she has fowl pox? One of my 5 hens have the (dry) fowl pox and I haven't seen signs on the other girls yet. Also, what is the duration of fowl pox from start to finish if it's only one bird?
Thanks for the info. I'm not sure if I have the nerve to do something like that for fear of hurting them; perhaps later on when I've had a few years under my belt...or as my neighbor puts it when my "feathers come in" LOL
I think introducing your dog to the chicks is highly dependent on whether your dog knows YOU are the Alpha to your pack.
I'm proud to say my dogs have not killed or harmed my chicks, but that's because I am making the extra effort to start introductions now, while the chicks are still young...
LOL The funny thing about poi dogs...they run from rocks, but lay out in the middle of the street as if they own it. When you drive up to them, they pick their heads up from the ground only long enough to look at you like "What? You REALLY think I'm moving for YOU?!" Then they go back to...
Hi! I see there are quite a few people from or living on Maui. I'm actually from Waimanalo, but currently live in Haiku, Maui. Love the area!! Reminds me of how Waimanalo used to be...long time ago.
I'm a new egg--(LOL, I think that's a cute title!)--to backyard chickens, but I fell in...
There are several reasons why the TTs may be pecking at the Ameraucanas. One reason may be that the TTs are establishing the pecking order. Another reason may be that the Amercaunas are "strangers" to the brood and need a gradual introduction to the TTs. Perhaps another reason could be that...
How old are your chicks? Perhaps you could separate the chick with the picking problem for a little bit while the injured one gets to hang out with the other, less aggressive chicks. There are several threads that talk about this issue in here...great help when you really need it!!
you freak out at the sight of a cat staring at your coop...from the second floor window across the street! Then run outside to stand guard with a broom like a crazy chicken lady!! LOL
I LOVE that picture!!! It has me believing in the possibility of doing the same for my little brood of RIRs...
Question: Is it too late to start doing this if my RIRs are 4 weeks old? I haven't handled them too much because I would've been crushed if I hurt them--they were so tiny!! However...
I love this article and the comments that go with it!! BYC really helped me when I started to research raising chickens. Now, 4 weeks after making that decision, my little brood is healthy, happy, and absolutely my FAVORITE animals--don't tell my dogs that! LOL My husband frequently "catches" me...
Love the article and all the comments!! Being a new chickie momma has been an easier process than I thought...thanks to BYC! I'm still though...but not the hard way :D Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge!
I could be wrong, but looks like a Rhode Island Red. I used to have one and she was a beautiful hen. If the first row of wing tips are straight, boy...if there are two layers at the tip, girl. So says my vet... I'm not sure what the breed is of the other one though, sorry.
