Just a military wife, mom of many, with my hands full homeschooling littles! (1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? Years ago we lived out in the country and had chickens. A few turned into many and quickly chicken math had us with about 100 birds at one point! It...

Has anyone used Rubber Mats for coop floor?

After years away, it is FANTASTIC to be back to chicken life and here on Backyardchickens! We have moved a few times since we last lived in the country and have purchased a home where we can have 8 hens! Our next step, of course, is coop designing! We are required to have the coop itself 2...

    Who laid this egg?

I found a new egg in the coop today! It is so tiny and cute! So of course it went into the incubator. Do you think my sizzle (silkie cross) or bantam cochin pullets layed it? I don't have any other small birds in the flock.

Would you ask for a refund or?

Ordered 6 eggs on ebay and they took longer to ship than indicated but I didn't mention it because I know hens lay when they want. The eggs got here and the box smelled so bad. Inside was shredded paper, and half an egg carton with eggs wrapped in one layer of paper towel and 2 burst eggs with...

    Chick Foot Issue

I have a chick almost a week old that is not using one of his legs/feet. Some how with all the rest of them I missed this. He does seem to be thriving. I need advice on what to do. This is a fist for us. Video of it hopping around on one leg: http://instagram.com/p/rOKgUxMGHW/

Can a Rooster change the egg color of the Hen he is on?

I ask because a friend has me a bit confused. She mentioned her frizzle pullet that always lays brown eggs suddenly gave her a white egg and it must be because her polish rooster mated her. I didn't think a rooster on a hen could change the hens egg color (just the offspring).

Trying to add 8-10 week olds to Flock... not going well.

I tried to add 4 pullets today (8-10 week olds) to the flock today. All the hens are about 6 months and 2 Roosters about that old as well (1 is very submissive and at the bottom of the pecking order, he doesn't even really crow...) So as expected the older pullets gave the new ones a bit of...

Bad Egg? -- Tiny Hard "drops" on the outside.

I received some shipped Welsummers and Barnevelder eggs at the start of the month and all seemed well except one egg was "wet" when I unwrapped it. None of the others seemed to have this issue. I choose not to set that egg just in case something wasn't right with it. The eggs have been in...

EE Rooster breeding with other breeds makes?

Mutts I am sure but what I mean to ask is, I have a EE Roo in with Light Brahms, a speckled sussux, black sexlinks, and a polish. (soon a New Hampshire Red, Olive Egger, Barred Rock) If he mates with them, what color eggs with the off spring have? Can you breed EEs to EEs to get EEs?

    Shipped Egg Wet?

We got shipped eggs and all look great but one of them is wet... I can't find a crack, it doesn't smell, but is it what they call a weeping egg? Should I set it in the incubator or not risk it?

How would I turn this shed into a coop?

If I got a shed like this: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Arrow-Hamlet-8-ft-x-6-ft-Steel-Storage-Building-HM86/100660039 How could I turn it into a coop? I would need a way to cut ventilation holes right? How? Putting in roosts wouldn't be hard, nest boxes wouldn't be hard. Could I make...

Could my chickens have given me E-Coli?

We are rather new to chickens, we have 9 Chickens, 4 ducks, from a hand full of different places. All look healthy! I had what I thought was the stomach flu, no fever for over a week. Someone suggested it might be e-coli from the birds. I am strict about hand washing and such, and make...

    Is this too small?

So we recently moved to the country and wanted to get chickens. Our babies are now 9 weeks old and there are 6 of them. We purchased a kit to put together. It says it is for 6 chickens but now I am wondering if it really is. It has 4 laying boxes on the back. We plan to move it around the yard...

    Are They Dying?

We have 6 chicks, 4 (Silver Laced Wyandottes, Black Australorps) of them we got from a feed store, they are growing fast, seem healthy and very active . What coop to buy for 6 large Chickens?

I have lurked on this forum for years it seems with my homeschool children. We have hatched chickens/ducks a few years now in late winter and kept the chicks/ducklings for a little bit before bringing them back to a farm we got the eggs/bator from. It was always a great experience for us all but...

Help! Video: Chick Hatched with yolk not yet absorbed!

The chick is no longer attached to the egg. Is there anything I should do. Clearly I have not opened the incubator. The video is through the top of the bators small window. Sorry it is hard to see, a lot of humidity in there!

    Another Pip Wrong End?

I was just reading the other thread about a chick pipping at the wrong end. The outlook some mentioned isn't good. Right now I have a hatched chick wobbling around and was cuddled up with this egg, then I noticed a chip missing from the egg, on the wrong end. My question is, could the...

Is the wire bottom ok for chicks?

This is our third year of hatching but the other two years have been ducks. This year is chickens! Tomorrow is day 18, so lock down. I was wondering if I should put something down in the incubator for the chicks when they hatch to help their little feet? Is the wire bottom ok for them...
