Hawk issues, and can't eliminate its perch!

ok, well I will be keeping them inside for a while. Hopefully it is just migrating and will move on once there is no more food supply aka my chickens in view. I got the scarecrow up yesterday, again not sure if it will make a difference or not, but one can hope. Also am looking into getting a...

Hawk issues, and can't eliminate its perch!

The past few weeks I have had several hawk attacks resulting in dead or lost birds. At first, I didn't know what it was, but narrowed it down to either a cat or hawk, since it was during the day. Yesterday I heard a commotion near the coop, so I rushed outside to investigate, to find my chickens...

Urgent! Newborn chick stepped on by Mama, punctured stomach

One of my baby chicks that was hatching today got accidentally stepped on by mama and her claw punctured baby's stomach. There was a little bit of blood and a lot of yolk. All of it is dried up now though and she is not bleeding anymore. However, a small bit of intestine is poking out, along...

    Mean, Egg Eating Hen

I have one hen that has been eating eggs for a while. Recently she has also become quite mean, squarking, fluffing up her feathers, and trying to peck me whenever I approach (whether she is in or out of a nesting box). I am going to have to either get rid of her or process her if she keeps doing...

What color is this EE Rooster?

I know there is a lot of specific terminology regarding chicken colors, but I am still relatively new to chickens and don't know this yet. I have a beautiful EE (hatchery called him an Araucana but I doubt it) rooster, I just don't know what color this would be called. What color would this be...

    Easter Eggers

I have an EE roo that I am planning on breeding with my hens and hatching chicks from this spring. My hens are barred rocks, brown leghorns, white leghorns, red sexlinks, naked necks, and a black langshan. What color eggs do you think those chicks would produce? Also, what color is this called...

Cousin dave, I hope I will soon have your problem instead of having 20 dozen eggs piling up in my fridge! Maybe your location has something to do with it? Where do you live?

    Best way to sell eggs?

What are some good ways to sell eggs? I have sold some to neighbors and people I know, but I still have way too many eggs in my fridge! I have considered craigslist and putting up fliers at the feed store and perhaps putting a sign in my front yard. What works best for you guys?

Worried about neighbor's loose beagle getting my chickens!

Would an extension cord from the house be a good enough electricity source lol? I have set up electric fences before but only the battery powered ones for horses, so I'm not quite sure how to set it up for chickens, other than setting it closer to the ground.

Worried about neighbor's loose beagle getting my chickens!

If I do decide to go with the electric fence, how would I find the right one and set it up? I have been browsing for some electric fences online but they all seem to be for horses and cattle, which if I am only going to be using it for chickens, seems like overkill to me. Also, I don't want to...

Worried about neighbor's loose beagle getting my chickens!

My coop is secure from dogs, however my run is not. I think any determined dog could dig under it. When I built it I intended it to be mostly just to keep chickens in, I don't think the neighbors had this beagle at the time so I didn't think of the possibility of a loose dog trying to get at my...

Worried about neighbor's loose beagle getting my chickens!

I really do want to file a complaint with animal control or just take it to the shelter, as suggested, but I also do not want to make my neighbors my enemy. There are one or more disabled persons in their house so I can see how the dog would get out easily, but that does not excuse them. Would...

Worried about neighbor's loose beagle getting my chickens!

My neighbors across the street recently adopted a beagle from the pound. Unfortunately this beagle frequently gets loose and runs up and down my fence with my dogs. My chickens are fenced in separately from our dogs, but I am afraid that one day the beagle will get into my chickens. What should...

Neighbor's cat getting into chickens! Help!!

I'm pretty sure it was the cat. I had seen it prowling around my coop for several days, and then during they daytime one of my birds was killed and almost completely consumed inside their fenced yard. Later that night, the predator returned and ate/dragged away the rest, including the bones. I...
