No eggs hatched today (February 24) :(, but I'm hoping that tomorrow will bring more luck. How long do you think I should give these eggs before I give up. And how can I tell if a chick has died in an egg?
My Buff Orpington went broody by herself in our coop for about 15-20 days. Yesterday evening I noticed she had left her clutch for over 20 minutes, but that night she still rested on top of them. The next morning I found her ranging and completing oblivious of her brood. I rescued 10 of the eggs...
I have a broody Buff Orpington hen that is hellbent on hatching her own brood. In past years we did not have a rooster so her attempts were futile. Many times a day for months at a time we would push her off the eggs and try to keep from being broody, but she never relented. In August we...
We have had 8 Silver-Laced Wyandottes as part of our flock. These birds are very attractive, good at handling both hot and cold conditions, and pretty good layers! These were some of the birds we originally chose to make up our first flock (half Barred Rock and half Silver-Laced Wyandotte). They...
Two years ago I had a little buff orpington chick with the same problem. I thought her head was screwed on backwards because she walked funny and it seemed like she was always on her back. I tried correcting her relentlessly for about a week until she finally got it. She was slow to molt and...
Yes they are all vaccinated, I think the problem was they were "misspent" in shipping. It was only for 1 day, but the other ones seem very healthy and I've never had a problem with this hatchery before. The little rhode island red just seems really weak. i don't think she's join to make it.
We ordered 4 hens from a hatchery (1 Delaware, 1 Rhode Island Red, 1 Speckled Sussex, and 1 Golden-Laced Wyandotte) and they just came at 9:30am this morning after being shipped 3 days ago. We have never had a problem with this hatchery before, but this time when I opened the box the Golden...

I'm hesitant to write this review and speak for the whole breed, but Jemima, our Black Australorp, has been amazing! She was the first of our chickens to start laying, and the last to stop during the winter. One thing I noticed, but since we only have one it might just be the individual...
Right from the start these birds were the friendliest. As chicks they were the only breed that would run towards your hand. All four of them have distinct personalities and physical appearances. They all lay very well too! One of the cons of this breed, that I've experienced, is that they often...
These birds have been the easiest I've ever raised! They lay large brown eggs almost every day and are friendly and docile. When we had encounters with predators, strangely enough we never lost a Plymouth Barred Rock, even though they had an equal ratio with another breed that was taken out all...
I have a smaller coop (maximum 20 birds) and a fully enclosed outdoor run that's 240 square feet. The coop has 3 nestboxes for our current 11 hens that open from the outside. The 11 (was 12 until recently were always fine sharing the boxes. I have 4 chicks on the way and next year possibly...
We only hay our fields about 3 times a year and even then it's donated to other farmers
I am thinking of adding a separate run so I can rotate them. Thanks for your ideas
Last year my chicken coop door was left open and all 16 of my hens escaped into the yard. We were away for that evening and didn't come home until about 11:00 that night. Our dogs (and the neighbor's dogs) were able to pick off the chickens one by one until only 8 remained. When we came home, we...
I had this problem too!! It ended up being one of my Plymouth Barred Rocks. She only ate her own egg (thankfully) and all i could find was the empty shell in the nest box. Good luck! My chicken still has the habit (sometimes).
Thats great! I occasionally let mine out to free range and they LOVE it! Its so healthy for them too. Be careful of predator though for they can strike at any time (especially hawks). With reasonable supervision and protection its great for them. Do you have a rooster?
I have 11 chickens (4 more on the way!) with a run thats about 12ft x 20ft. At first everything was fine and the chickens would scratch around in the grass and eat all sorts of bugs that lived in the grass. Unfortunately, after several months the grass was total diminished, roots and all. With...
