Are there hatcheries in or close to the bay area (google hates me) that sell a wide variety of friendly breeds? I will have to use MPC if there aren't any, but I'd like to know first.
Has anyone has good luck with these? What were the active ingredients? Is it possible they can be too powerful (bothering neighbors' dogs or your own cat)?
I'm planning a pond (made out of a bathtub and maybe a few other old bathroom bits) that I will add to my chicken run. I hope to add a duck or two to the pond someday and want my plans to incorporate future waterfowl in keeping the important plants.
I will be growing jasmine polyanthem, reed...
Currently, we live right next to someone who owns a duck. Said duck yaps his head off all night and bothers the crap (please pardon that) out of my sister and her husband.
I, however, want my own duck. I'd get it after constructing my own pond and use the poop water to fertilize my veggies...
Hi. I'm a foodie and when discovered pickled eggs were a real thing, I started looking for a recipe. Nothing I found seemed too enticing, so I thought I'd ask here and see what people suggested and which recipes were the sweetest or the most flavorful.
I intend for most birds I own to end up in the fridge.
However, if I kill all my flock, there's obviously none left when I run out. I will need my meat to make more meat.
That's where I'm a bit confused.
Do I eat the babies or parents?
How do I keep the remaining birds to cope with the...
How much water would waterfowl (pair of ducks, pair of geese. Maybe another bird if possible) actually need?
I want to spend my non-bird time designing stuff for them, and my family has done plumbing and even pond maintenance before (a pair of ducks moved in after the big sump-pump and the...
Pardon the phrasing, please. What does everyone here do for a living? Farm for profit? Job and side money from eggs? Something else entirely?
I'm an aspiring novelist and I sell art prints and T-shirts. I'm going to get into sewing and jewelery for sale soon.
I'm confused about humans in poultry pecking orders. Are humans who raise the flock the 'top chicken' for being bigger than the rest, or is there something about you the chickens respond to better (such as dogs responding to male humans for being male, having facial hair, or deeper voices)?
I...
Are certain egg colors on recessive genes and others on dominant genes? If breeds are mixed, which gene decides egg color? Do easter egger mixes ever lay colored eggs? I can't find much on mixing easter egger breeds with other breeds.
I thught quail were only bred to hunt until Isaw this forum and then looked up quail eggs--and was very surprised they're good or you.
But , are the different breeds for different things? Are some for hnting, some for eggs, and some for meat, or are they all 'multi-pupose'?
I was discussing plans for ducks needing water that drains (unless he wanted to bail every week himself). He doesn't want to bail at all, let alone often, but he's worried if we have chickens and ducks together, the chickens will poop in the pool enough to foul it up despite the draining and...
Hi. My name's Jenn. My fiance got me interested in homesteading and after some research, I've got my heart set on some goats and a lot of birdies when I manage to move out.
In the meantime, I want to learn as much as I can, ven how adorable or delicious everyone's animas can be.
Just something I've been wondering: Quail are too small to be kept with full-grown or juvenile chickens, but what about chicks or other baby birds?
I heard of an ingenius iea of using a baby playpen for raising new babies before movng them into coops, could it be used for quail when there...
I'm looking into homesteading fror when I buy my first house, but I have so many questions already while just considering birds.
Heritage turkeys seem to be an ideal bird, as they--especially reds and blacks, I've read--are social and calm, plus delicious. But will mixing breeds be bad (I...
