I live in C. Fl., I have had orps for years. I have not had any heat related problems. My coops are shaded during the day. Broody, yes, their nature. I have one Barred Rock hen that lives with them. Integrated at about two months old. They did kill one orp chick one time that was about about two...
Old thread but, It came up in search so I will post what I have learned, I like my nuwave's. I have both PIC and oven. Manf stated that oven has limitations. One seems to be a loaf of bread. P10 temp is only about 340-350 degrees. Most bread that I bake needs 400 degrees to reach internal temp...
"I doubt I can pick up a super, and I will likely be out there working bees without help."
There are several ways around picking up a conventional full super of honey if you desire to do that when extracting.
Sorry, I can certainly understand how you feel from experience and that coon was not just curious, it's instinct was to kill, eat the crop and maybe a little more, then do it again if possible.
I buried 12" tin flashing around my coop vertically. It has paid off from the signs of coons trying...
I did this 1/2 in a ventilated carton and 1/2 laying down last hatch. I had a 50% hatch rate, 6 out of 12 and did not candle, EBay shipped eggs. 3 hatched in the carton and 3 laying down. Only thing I learned was that they could get out of the carton as easily as the ones laying down. None were...
Blue Orpingtons. It has remained at 6 out of 12, I didn't candle any and this hatch I tried 6 in a cut up egg carton and 6 on their side. Didn't learn a darn thing, 3 in the carton and 3 on their side hatched.
I wish I videoed the one I watched hatch in the carton, it peeped all the way around...
Mine is in the AC in the back room of our house. But it is thinly insulated plywood, not foam. It could not regulate the temp in my tin barn, too hot already. It is next to a west window with curtains, but is working fine there.
I never heard of it, until I did a search on my roosters symptoms, now it scares me. He was bout 6 months old and I had bought him bout a month or so ago to go with my 2 hens. I put him in a cage the first night in a barn he was down in the legs and wings down where there are some 5 wk chicks in...
It must cause the big one (Lucy) is starting to feather like she (it) should. The little one (Lulu Bell) is really filling out, but no feathers. Wife named them. I'da called them Fred & Ethel with high hopes. (Showing my age I guess).
Nothing fancy here, a insulated plywood box, removable top with double pane diploma frames, a small front access door (sized to fit my hand with an egg in it). Homemade egg turner. Digital thermostat and Inc. Wh. digital thermostat/hygrometer. Computer fans & telephone power supply for them...
Mine fried as well, literally, melted the case only mine went open circuit instead of closed to the heat element. Good people to work with as far as product replacement or refund, but now I have a new one I'm scared to trust. I also see they raised the price to $75 on it.
Let me try to make myself clear. EMPIRE is correct, Nuc's should always have a mated and laying queen when received. Packages also should have a mated queen.
Talk about smell, wait til you get to extracting some honey, that is even better to me.
