What happens when you swap top hens?

My old flock (3 hens) will not stop harassing my new flock (2 hens). I've introduced them gradually for several months. I've had them separated right next to each other as the pullets were growing. After 2 months I placed the new 4 month old hens into the coop. I've tried to place them into...

Nipple vs. cup waterers and auto fill

The youtube link shows how its done. THis is where i got the idea from. The L shape he uses is Australia standard. I asked several home supply stores and they don't sell the kind he uses. Not to California code. I used a standard 3 inch L shape drainage connector.

Jersey Giant and Barred Rock Cross Breed

Does anybody have experience with Jersey Giant/Barred Rock cross breed for meat? I hear different things about JG. Slow growth equals bad taste or slow growth has more flavor. But since these are a cross would that still be an issue with the slow growth and how old would be the optimum time...

    My Handsome Pitbull Otis

I put my broader next to my dogs bed. I also a pitbull. My dog would whimper and growl. When dog does that you need to stop it right away. When the chicks were old enough to go outside I let the dog out with them. The dog would attempt to approach the chicks in a very hunting motion. You...

Nipple vs. cup waterers and auto fill

It's an L shape pvc connector. I cut groves on the end that is in the container. Very clean, never any spills, saves a ton on wasted feed. They can't get their feet in so they cant scratch the feed. They just stick their heads in and peck at the feed.

Nipple vs. cup waterers and auto fill

I just finished building my coop and water/feeder.(water cups) and attached it to 4 inch pvc pipe with my garden sprinkler refilling it automatically. It took them 3-4 days to figure out how to refill the water. My friend recently purchased the nipples and he hasn't had any problems. The...

    Nesting Box Opening

Hi Yall, I have 2 sexlink and 1 Barred Rock. They are currenly 4 weeks old. I just built my nesting box, but realized the opening is only 7 inches wide by 10 inch height. Inside the box is 12x12x12 inch. Is the opening big enough for the chickens to enter with out injuring themselves? Also...

Whats better a poopboard or deep litter method?

My hen house is 3x4x3 and will house 3-4 hens. I'm getting the feeling that the poop board under their roost might be the recommendation. But I would like the convienence of cleaning out less. Would their be any issues with doing a DLM in such a small pen. It's got an open top with and...

    Do bears eat chickens??

There's a mama bear and cub that live near my home. The bears frequent my trash cans. I have bear proof trash cans but they broke into them. There is nothing the bears will not eat. There is no chicken coop that is bear proof. If they want the chickens they will get them. I tried to scare...

Whats better a poopboard or deep litter method?

I just built a coop and trying to figure out how to handle the poop. What do you think? Is it better to have a deep litter method or poopboard. I have 3 hens and don't mind cleaning once a week. Would prefer less maintenance but if I need to clean more often then I will.
