    Can chickens eat walnuts??

I wonder is the protein especially good during their molt? My little six month old here prefers brazil and walnuts to her mash and she is molting, also eating her own feathers. Would it be better to feed her cat food?

Vet suggestion for non-invasive bumblefoot cure

Greetings, I have good news to share on bumblefoot: Last summer I remember reporting my Wyandotte Margaret's bumblefoot. Her corn was so large our avian vet could not cut it out without crippling her, i.e. she said there would be no foot left. Instead she showed us how to make a shoe for...

bumble foot treated by vet with curious results...

Several weeks ago, hen Margaret developed what looked like bumble foot between her toes. Took her to vet who treated her with antibiotics (wish I knew which) for a week with injections subcutaneous under the skin on the back between the wings. The size seemed to decrease a little, but then at...

Help! How to stop my hen from annoyingly crowing like a rooster

Thank you, this is exactly what I was looking for! My 3.5 year old hen Coco (bluebell) has just started crowing in the mornings. Just like a cockerel except her crows are not as nice as some, nor as loud. By the way, she has never laid an egg, but she is shaped just like a hen and does...

    Abscess on foot. **pic** UPDATE

My chicken vet says it is a varuca that causes the infection to enter. She says varucas cannot be cured, they don't go away. I wonder whether the varuca is the "plug" everyone is talking about. Good news: there is a special kind of bandage for chicken feet. Reading this thread I am...

    Abscess on foot. **pic** UPDATE

Yes, they do take to you when you are caring for them. Be careful when you put her back with her flock (bullying). Find the worst bully immediately and pretend care for her to overcome any envy issues. You're doing such a great job!

Found this rooster living in the woods next to my house!!! Help I want to catch him!! Someone droppe

Hi there, Hermit, and happy New Year, All! I just wanted to share that over the last couple of months I have learned the following: 1) Orpington cockerels live together and do not fight. They just establish a hierarchy. The alpha cockerel seems to be the one who crows, the others crow...

GL Wyandotte x Splash Orpington--how do they look and behave?

We have two LF GL Wyandotte hens and had Splash Orpington cockerels hatched from eggs bought from a breeder near Orpington---unfortunately all five birds turned out to be cockerels! There was mating before we rehomed the young men, and now the two hens have gone broody, taking turns sitting on...

At night, our Orpingtons line up and patiently wait in the cold for us to put them into the hen house with a goodnight cuddle. Our other hens have never done this but just go straight into the hen house to roost. It is true Orpingtons are amazingly sweet pets.

I forgot to mention the good news about Orpington cockerels: they do not fight, but establish a pecking order so you can keep more than one cockerel. My concern is the crowing as we live in a densely populated small city.

Love your review and can't wait to show it to my son who has always been telling me they would swim! How adorable! We have two Wyandottes and now have five young Orpingtons--three of which are splashes, one is silver-laced, and one is a mix, I think of the two. We got them as hatching eggs...

    does anyone decrow? recommendation?

Question: does caponising work on cockerels that have just begun crowing? One of mine started at age nine weeks! Now we have three others crowing, but not as loud as him--all the same age. They hatched in mid June so must be five months old. They are LF Orpingtons, very tame, and we'd love...

Found this rooster living in the woods next to my house!!! Help I want to catch him!! Someone droppe

I guess he never returned as the last post is over a year ago. I am so sorry. At least he enjoyed his last days on the planet, or of that incarnation! Hope your new roosters and hens are doing well.

Could be a kind of Orpington. I have an Orpington cockerel hatched last June so nearly five months old, that looks very much like your guy. Gorgeous bird! Our Henry hatched from a hatching egg from an Orpington breeder who only keeps Orpingtons. (By the way, this breeder is located very...

When is a rooster sexually mature?

We had two fighting cockerels at age 16 weeks--bleeding neck on one, awful. They had gotten along until then though had frequent staring matches. Once the bleeding one had recovered, i.e. the next morning, we stopped their fighting by placing the one who started it into the penalty box (small...

Fly Eggs on Baby Chick! GROSS!

Get the stuff the sheep farmers use against fly strike. I do not remember what it is called. Main thing is that the fly has not laid any eggs in the flesh of the chick--otherwise it is fatal if not caught in time. I guess this was 90 minutes ago so perhaps too late. For future reference...

    Broody Hen being bullied...Help?!

My broody was being bullied whenever she came out to eat--in the evening before sunset--and all three of them bullied her, chasing her away from the food and water and pecking at her. Then I noticed when the others went in for the night, our alpha hen stepped on her and pecked her on the head...

Will Chickens take turns laying on their eggs?

Have one broody hen (LF Wyandotte) who rarely ever leaves. This evening she left her nest, complained loudly, hardly ate, then returned. Every night, however, Coco, a bluebell, sits on the nest, but only at night. This evening, I am going to put hatching eggs into the nest and was wondering...
