I started with 6 "hens" and cried when we had give away the one rooster(we live in town with close neighbors). Then over last 3 1/2 yrs I've lost all but one. Glynda Pearl is my last one. Hubby says no more until we move out to the country. What sweeties!

I notice posts saying not to rush them laying but mine started squatting when I walked near them a couple of weeks before they started laying. They were still on chick starter, I've only just switched to layer. How do you delay laying?

Today, BOSS, cracked corn and cold watermelon.

Food and water outside under the coop. My coop isn't big enough for birds and food containers. Plus, the coop stays open to the run, it's too hot here to close them up.

Cold watermelon rind (with an inch or so of melon left)!!!!! Of course pretty much anything "people food" and it's a show.

One of my girls started at 15 weeks. Now I think I have 2 more laying. They started "singing the egg song" about a week before the first egg.

Yesterday 2/5. None yet today, but these girls sing about it for a few hours before they lay. Should have them by noon.

I'm in Dothan. I have 5 hens and 1 rooster. Perfect except that I live "in town" and my rooster(formerly known as Dottie) alerts the neighborhood of daybreak and mid-morning and lunch time and squirrel(I think he's watched the dog too much). Thanks to this chicken community I have learned so much.

Mine are doing the same thing! In fact I just came in from putting them to bed. Only one went in on her own. They've been out for a week now, well, almost a week and that's after being locked in for bout a week. My father ,who grew up with chickens, said they will figure it out. But....it bugs...
