How do I break her of this nasty habit?

I've got a bird who lays her egg then immediately breaks and eats it. I'm not sure how to break her of it. I've heard of some of the egg eating fixes like putting pepper in the egg, but she only breaks and eats hers and it's immediately after she lays. She's making a mess of the nest box. :(

Frequent broody hen is going into the stew pot if someone won't come and get her (N. Texas).

Update: She's gone to a nice family. Thanks y'all! She's a gold laced wyandotte. She will hatch your eggs or raise your chicks so you won't need to fuss with a brooder. She was hatched spring of 2013 and from hatchery stock. I got her when she was 14 weeks old. She had her first molt this...

    Traumatized chicken?

So there was a commotion and suddenly all of my birds were running to the other side of the yard screaming. I go out to check and make sure something hasn't attacked them and quickly take a head count. Everyone was accounted for but they were spread out and looking as if something had attacked...

What is up with my hen?

Everyone is going through their first adult molt. Everyone but this one has been doing a hard molt. Except for a few tail feathers, this one hen doesn't even look like she's molting. She was the first to start molting though but it's been an easy one. She started well over a month ago. Since...

    Molting chickens and the cold

I'm not sure if I should bring them in tonight. Two of mine are going through a really hard molt. It's going to get down to 23 tonight when it was in the 80's just the other day. It's 38 degrees right now and they're inside the coop. Last year it got into the teens and they were out and about...

Not sure what to feed them

I have three hens over a year old. With them are two pullets that are about 13 weeks old. They all free range. Since adding the little ones, I moved them from layer feed to the starter/grower and have free choice oyster shell. Since moving them to the starter/grower, one hen has had some...

    Hawk question

I've got three full grown hens and two that are around 15 weeks that free range in my urban backyard. I caught a redtailed hawk this morning trying to snatch one of the little ones! I saw something big swoop by the window then heard the birds freak out. I went out and found the hawk sitting on...

    Integration

I'm on Day 3 of introducing some 12-ish week old chicks to some adult birds. Mine free range so they have lots of space. Also have many water and feed stations for them. Anyway, Day 3 means the new girls are allowed to roost with them. But don't they dare drink water at the same time. Crazy...

    Two flocks into one

I've introduced two newbies to my established flock of 3. The newbies are 10-12 weeks old (I've lost count) and were sectioned off in the run for a while. The others continued to free range. Things are going alright. They sleep in the same coop. However, when out, the newbies have no interest in...

    Hen is missing!

I've now lost two full grown birds!  The first one I thought my dog had done it because I found him with her. But there had been a pile of feathers under the kitchen window where I suspect the initial attack took place and I found her and the dog on the other side of the yard. I wonder now if...

    A worming question

I did the first initial worming with Wazine on the day I noticed suspicious poo and plan to follow up with Valbazen. Trouble is, I'm leaving for vacation and the 10 day follow up worming is a day after I leave. Since Valbazen apparently works on worms for three days, can I give it to them a day...

So the elders aren't looking at the babies with disgust anymore

I caught my original flock laying against the chicken wire next to the babies (8 weeks old) and the babies laying next to them. Both parties looked pretty content. This is only day three of being able to see but not touch. Boss hen isn't complaining anymore either. Thank you Lord because she has...

DFW Texas area-Looking for a blue and a chocolate egg layer

Looking for someone near DFW selling pullets old enough to put with adult birds 12 weeks at least, preferably more like 15 weeks). Im not looking for show quality. I'm looking for a blue egg layer and a dark brown egg layer. Looking for any of these- Welsummer Marans (something other than...

    Hatching eggs or chicks?

I want to add just two birds to my flock (3 birds) and let my broody raise them. I want to add an EE and a breed that lays dark chocolate colored eggs. I really like the Wheaten Marans and feel it would be a nice color to add to my small flock of mostly dark colored birds. However, I have a few...

I let my hen get hurt

I'm feeling so low. I let the dogs out and forgot about them. When I remembered them, I was too late and found one of my dogs had pinned down a hen and was tearing her feathers out. She was so still that I thought she was dead. But she moved slightly and I immediately began assessing her wounds...

    When would you add more?

I've got four hens right now. I have a 4x4 coop and a 4x8 run but mine range the backyard from sun up to sun down every day. If I go on vacation (maybe once per year), a neighbor lets them out in the morning and locks them up in the evening. So, my four are nearing a year old. And four in their...

My inlaws dogs are driving me crazy!

I'm taking care of their two dogs while they are on vacation. They have no training and won't go outside or come inside when told. They just sit and look at you or run away. They have to come in because they're foo foo dogs who will get too hot if left outside. They've made me late for work...

    Broody AGAIN?!?! Oh come awn!

She's not even a year old and she's trying to go broody. I thought I broke her but went out and found her sleeping in the nest box. She's not full on broody yet but this time I have to use the cage since she's not snapping out of it. She had just got back to laying from her last episode. I...

How much does a fecal test cost you?

I called around and was surprised by how many vet, including livestock vets, would not to a fecal test for poultry. I found a vet who would and it's $30. Just wondering if this is too high or if there are better options. I'd rather not worm them if I don't have to.
