    20% laying pellets vs scratch

Our chickens live off of mostly 20% protein laying pellets and chicken scratch. What % of each should we be giving them? They are mostly hens either laying or beginning to lay? My uncle do a 50-50 ratio. I think it should be mostly the laying pellets and scratch should be a treat. What ratio...

What to do with very muddy eggs?

We had a lot of rain and my eggs are very muddy. I've heard not to wash eggs that go in the bator. What do I do? The mud doesn't just flake off it's painted on pretty good.

    Feeding hatched eggs back?

I've heard many people dry out eggshells and feed them back for calcium. What about egg shells that chickens have hatched out from? Is that safe? Thanks for any help.

    boiling my first rooster

I am culling an 8-9 month old rooster today. I plan on boiling it and making chicken egg salad. Do I need to let the bird "rest" in the refrigerator for 2-3 days as some people suggests? Thanks

Best way to preserve a tiny egg?

I got an egg less that the size of a quarter. What is the best way to preserve it? I've heard of blowing it out. How you do make a hole in it without breaking the shell? Thanks for any help.

How to sex a young chicken?

I want to eat a few birds (barnyard mixed breeds) that I hatch. The problem is the size and age (3-4 months old) that I want to harvest them I can't tell if they are roosters or hens yet. They look the same. I only want to eat the roosters. How does everyone else sex their birds?

One of my new layers layed a tiny, tiny egg. With a picture.

Does this just mean she is figuring it out? How common is this for a first time layer? Also is it safe to eat? I'd love to make a miniature fried egg! Thanks for any input.

Does anyone know anything about this old incubator?

It is a favorite ingubator 1200E that I received. I was wondering if it is worth money or worth hatching eggs. It seems really old. Thanks for any help.

    Chickens feet seemed cramped up.

I posted a couple weeks ago about a chicken that had trouble standing, like loss of balance. Now she is better, but her feet seemed cramped up so she cann't fully stand up or walk. She tries to push herself up, but her feet are cramped up like a ball. Does anyone know what could be the problem...

Very basic automatic egg turner question.

In the past I've flipped my eggs by hand with the X and O method. I've received a used automatic turner and it seems that you put the small end of the egg in the holes first and it just "leans" the eggs to one side and the other without completely turning the eggs over. Is this right? How do the...

Why do my hens only lay in the morning?

I have 7 that are laying now and it seems like by 1 or 2 in the afternoon they are finished. It doesn't get dark until about 6:30. Is this normal? I live in Central Texas and it has been mostly nice weather lately.

Got a Greeng egg! Now a question.

I got a colorful green egg from a hen that I am pretty sure just stared laying. Will all her eggs be green or is it just a sporadic thing? Also are there certain breeds that will lay green eggs or is that just a lucky thing also?

What was the cost of feed 2 and 5 years ago?

I am fairly new to raising chickens and I pay about 12 dollars for a 50 lb bag of laying mash at tractor supply. I've seen it as low as 9.75 at a small farming town and as high as 14.50 at the local store. I've heard that feed has skyrocketed as of late. Is this true? Just curious what some...

Please help with a 7 month old Dominecker.

I have a Dominecker that has seemed to lose all balance. She just lays on her stomach and flops around. I am pretty sure her legs aren't broken. She seems to be eating and drinking well. I have her isolated for now. Any suggestions? Thanks
