    Polish Thread!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It just depends. Generally, hatchery birds don't compete as well in shows as those from breeders. However, on the flip side, I have seen people start with hatchery birds and selectively breed for a number of years and wind up with some nice show birds. And every so often you just get lucky...

Does anyone out there have any Canadian line Silver Penciled Rocks? How do they compare to our domestic lines? Just interested in learning more.

We seem to have good width, carried well back into the tail. They are definitely not Wyandottes! Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the advice!!! Well, guess I'm glad I'm not seeing them, then! Haha! The hens are wide over the cushion area but not poofy. I will try to get some pictures just of them. Thanks, I really appreciate the advice.

That's encouraging, because the hens are just lovely, with good penciling throughout only diminishing into the fluff. I think also that their cushion may take a while to fully develop, just like the Langshans. I kept back one cockerel to breed the hens back to and start two lines, putting the...

Nice birds. I notice that my oldest batch of pullets are about 6 months old now, their penciling has consistently improved (the original hens are very clearly and distinctly marked) but they are not as clearly marked, especially over the saddle area as the parent hens. I assume they won't have...

I will be hatching some Buff Laced Polish from Anderson/Nachtmann bloodlines. These are very competitive birds. Our breeding pens are set up, just waiting for them to start laying.

dHi Wynette! Thank you, yes we love our Schipperkes and they are great family dogs for sure. Ours, and we have a little herd of them, are great with all the livestock, even the chickens. It is unusual that someone knows of one! I am really enjoying the forums; lots of good information being...

    Pair of Silver Penciled Rocks

We have available one pair (cockerel and pullet) of large fowl Silver Penciled Rocks, suitable for show. The pictures show the cockerels and pullets and the show photo is of our main flock sire. They are about half grown at this age. We ship from Paso Robles, CA, via USPS express mail...

    Poop in the waterer?

That's a great idea if they are pulling feed out! Haven't had much problem with that, we use a lot of feeders and only fill them half way.

    Old and Rare Breeds

I would be inteested in a pair or trio of young birds if you have them available at some point. They are amazing birds.

    Poop in the waterer?

Forgot to mention, with very small bantam chicks, we start them on newspaper sheets under a light, with a 1 qt. mason jar screwed onto a gamebird fount bottom, which are about half the size of a regular chick fount bottom. This prevents them becoming soaked, and is narrow so it keeps them out...

    Poop in the waterer?

Here are pictures of the "wire floors" I elevate our feeders and waterers on. This shows them after 2 days without changing. The bedding is rice hulls, which fall easily through the 1/2" holes in the wire mesh. I think this only would work well if the bedding can pass through the wire grid...

Facts on Breeding Lines and Toe Punching for Marking Chicks

This is really helpful info. It takes a while to get it, I found it really helpful to draw it out visually. Thanks.

    Omega Egg Maker Supplement

It sounds like it has gotten damp and it has mold. Not good, take it back. The feed should not stick together or have a moldy smell. They can get fungal diseases from some spoiled feeds.

    What can't they eat???!?!?!?

I have heard they should not eat citrus or barley (but other grains are OK). Ours have eaten both of these though, with no ill effects. It probably depends a lot on quantity and duration.

    feeding chickens spent brewing grains

This is great feed for ruminants (sheep, goats, cattle etc) and we feed it daily to our ruminant livestock, but according to the Poultry Sci department at Cal Poly, SLO, chickens cannot digest barley. Wheat is OK. I have fed it before to some of our chickens and geese; it's OK once in a while...

which is best-Poultry nipples or cups

We use 2 types of the orange cup automatic waterers. I believe the Edstrom waterers are the best, as the internal fittings are silicone and ours are now almost 18 years old with no problems at all. They also make the best trouble free automatic rabbit water nipples as well. The other type of...

    Poop in the waterer?

Hi, we had the same problem. I solved it by taking a square of 1/2" x 1/2" wire mesh about 14-16" square, cutting out a 2" square from each corner and folding the flaps down, to make a wire platform 2" tall. I set the 1 gal waterers on this. I bed the chicks in rice hulls, which don't get...
