My whole flock has suddenly stopped laying

We live in Central Queensland, so we won't see any sort of winter conditions for around three months and then it will be very mild. This time of year we get around 12 hours of daylight and today's temp is 34 degrees Celsius (around 93 degrees Fahrenheit). Last nights minimum was 22 degrees (76...

My whole flock has suddenly stopped laying

I have a flock of five, including a Welsummer (2 1/2 years old), Rhode Island Red (2 1/2 years old), a Black Sex Link (2 years) and two Isa Browns (2 years). We haven't had a single egg from them in the last week. We are still having summer weather here, temperatures around 30 - 35 degrees...

    Egg pecker

They progressed to egg eating :( I came out this morning and the nesting box is filled with sticky egg white, while four of the five were outside pecking into an egg that was on the floor of the run. Since it's nearly all of them doing it I am trying out mustard filled eggs as a deterrent.

    Egg pecker

I'm pretty sure they are pecked. The shell is cracked inward but not enough to break the membrane. They've also been eggs from three different hens, not just all from one hen. Thanks for the link though :) We are still learning a lot and I've book marked it for reference if needed. So far the...

whats the most annoying response you get when people find out you have chickens?

Our chicken coop and run sits 5 metres from my home office where I work all day with the window open for the breeze. Not a bit of stink at all. When people talk about chicken stink I wonder what sort of conditions they have encountered chickens living in before. All of my close extended...

    Egg pecker

We have five hens in a run together. The older two have been laying for a while now with no issues with their eggs. The younger three have all just started laying in the last week, but they have been in the run with the older hens for a couple of months. For the past two days when I've...

26 weeks, when will she start laying?

She just laid her first egg at almost 31 weeks! I found it on the floor of the run this morning, hopefully we can get her using the nesting boxes next time.

Adding 8 week olds to adult flock

Thanks :) I wasn't sure if the protein would be too high for my laying hens.

Adding 8 week olds to adult flock

Can I ask what you are feeding them? We have some 9 week old chicks I'd like to move in with the older hens. Our local store stocks a 15.5% protein, 1% calcium feed that is medicated, so it can't be given to the layers; a 15% protein, 3.8% calcium feed that I'm not sure if it is too high in...

26 weeks, when will she start laying?

She is one of our first chickens so we still have a lot to learn. I've just done a thread search and read up a bit on checking the pelvic bones, I might try that tomorrow. She is the first we have raised from hatching, and the friendliest, so she is definitely a loved pet and will stick around...

26 weeks, when will she start laying?

Our big red hen is 26 weeks old now but hasn't laid an egg yet. Her face and comb have been this red for around the last three weeks but I haven't seen any signs of squatting. Any thoughts as to whether she is close to laying?

    AAARRGGH...Canine Serial Killer! Help!

Overall our rate of gun related crimes and gun related deaths are much lower than US. Physical assaults are more prevalent here than gun related crime, but yes there would be some level of illegal gun ownership as I think there would be in most countries with strict gun laws. My post was more...

    Explaining Chicken Math

I love this thread, I have been sitting and laughing half the morning. I am absolutely going to show it to my DH to show him how restrained I've actually been :) You see, we started with three eggs in a little incubator as an experiment for the children. Only one egg hatched and you can't...

    AAARRGGH...Canine Serial Killer! Help!

We are in Queensland, Australia and own rifles. To clear things up, you need a licence for any type of rifle, including air rifle. In order to get the licence you need to demonstrate you are the member of a gun club, or require it for work purposes, or live on a rural property over 40 acres...

Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

We were recently discussing what our friends do with the roosters they don't keep for breeding. My five year old informed me that you can't eat real chickens because they are too boney. He told me you have to go to the shop to buy the food that looks like chicken instead. So much for getting...

Looking for confirmation of the gender and breed?

Hooray! Thanks everyone, she has such a beautiful personality I would be devastated to lose her too. Can't wait until she starts laying now!

Looking for confirmation of the gender and breed?

We just had the experience of having to rehome a rooster that the breeder swore was a pullet. He didn't end up crowing until five months old, so now I'm paranoid that I don't have a handle on sexing chickens at all! This is our red (hopefully) girl that I would like confirmation of the gender...

    Please help with gender?

UPDATE: We rehomed our roosters and kept what we think is our girl. The roosters were swapped for a Welsummer and a Sussex that the breeder swore were pullets. Lo and behold, at around five months of age our Sussex started crowing This is our red (hopefully) pullet but now I'm paranoid that...

Day old chick with swollen crop

Thank you, that's reassuring. She is still quite energetic and otherwise seems normal. Should I remove the food overnight or is it okay to leave it there? She is in the brooder with just one other chick.

Day old chick with swollen crop

I brought home a day old chick today. She was eating and drinking heartily, and I went out for an hour this afternoon and came home to find her crop is very swollen. She is only having medicated chick starter and fresh water. Any advice on what to do?
