If feed stores closed and you can’t free range...

I can't free range because I'm in the city and it's not allowed. But I give them my weeds, there are certain weeds I let grow. I have a WEED Garden. Then they get all safe kitchen scraps, melon rind, stuff like that. If all else fails, I'll give them bird seed. I do take a fishing stringer and...

Is this ordinance unfair? I need advice!

Wow, I'm in the Phoenix AZ area and you think it would be stricter. But here in Mesa AZ we are allowed 10 chickens. 11 and it has to be a farm. That's 10 chickens in the middle of a big city in tiny yards. (Unless you are living in a stupid HOA) So NO, I don't think that's fair. I think it may...

    Keeping a clean coop...

I don't clean. But I have an open coop/run because I'm in the hot desert. I just keep adding straw. I'll cut the bindings and toss them, then let the hens have fun spreading it around for me. They do a very good job. It's extremely hot here in summer (over 110°) So I have a mister system on 1...

    Too hot help

I'm in Phoenix and have an Open Air coop with misters. I purchased 2 dog kennels from Lowes and attached them together as 1 large coop and run. 1 end I attached panels on 3 sides, only about 1/3 of the end, and 1/2 of the top. This was to protect from weather and our dust storms. The rest I...

Sick Hen... Not sure whats happening! Arizona

It's so hot. A water mister is a must. Shade isn't enough. After loosing several chickens, I put up a mister and never lost another one. A shallow pool helps, but they make it nasty pretty fast. I have an open coop. 2 dog kennels from Lowes put together to make one. The coop end has boards on...

    Tile cooling station

It depends on where you live. I'm in the desert where it gets up to 120 and is BONE dry. So a mister system is the only way to go.

    Tile cooling station

It was 102 here yesterday and is supposed to be 105 tomorrow. I have a mister system attached to my springler system. I turn it on for them when it reaches over 103 here. They are in an open coop and a run. Actually a double dog kinel with 3 sides with shade screen or boards. To many cats and...

What do you do with all those eggs?

I give them away, then in the winter when they really start laying (I'm in Phoenix AZ area and we are backwards, they slow down or stop when the temps reach 115°+) I've tried freezing them, nope, shell didn't work. Then mixing the whole egg like for scrambling and freezing. OK, but not great. So...

Can my chickens stand the heat

I've lived in GA and been in Louisiana. It's real humid there. The 90's are miserable. But until you stand in the shade with the heat waves coming up off the ground and it's still 115° to 120° you have no idea how fast the dehydration starts.

Can my chickens stand the heat

I feel your pain. I'm in the Phoenix area and most people just don't understand the high DRY heat we have here. Install a mist system. I turn mine on at 104 to 105. On those nights where our low is 103° I leave it running all night. I do find that Red sexlinks and Easter eggers do real well. All...

Has anyone ever CANNED eggs?... UPDATE! I opened a jar!!!

Just ran into this thread. Yes, you can make pickled eggs. But eggs are not suitable for Pressure canning, so you do have to pickle them. Meathod 1: Google Pickled eggs for the refridgerator. These will stay good for over a month. Yes they will turn a little rubbery. That's what pickling does...

    Royal Palm stopped laying

Hmm, that may be the problem. I didn't add lighting. So she didn't start till Spring and then stopped for broody, then stopped because it was extremely hot. Even my hens stop when temps reach 110+ degrees and only cools down to 100+ at night. If I don't turn on the misters at 105 they start...

    Royal Palm stopped laying

We probably get more winter light than you do. I put a solar light up last year, but the battery in those little things just don't last. This year I'm stringing up the big bulb Christmas lights in clear. Will be cute in the yard and maybe wake the egg laying up.

    Royal Palm stopped laying

Thank you so much for your info. My hens lay more in the mild winters here. We have on average 2 freeze warnings a year. But the summers, well, when it gets to 105, I turn the misters on in the coup. I'm in the city where we can't have toms or roo's. So I collect every day. It isn't always fun...

    Royal Palm stopped laying

She laid eggs almost daily for about 9 months, then she stopped. I thought it was because it was winter. I'm in the AZ desert, so it doesn't get cold and my hens produce more in winter than in summer when it's so hot I have to turn on the water misters for them. Come spring, she laid daily...

    Arizona Chickens

I use shade cloth on the top of the coop and on the afternoon sun side. You can get the nice eyelets for the edges at Harbor Freight.

    Arizona Chickens

No, the feathers are stained. Just the tops. Even my white quail that are off the ground. Miss Turkey runs to the side to stand in the sprinkler when we water the grass. Even when it's not hot. She's only white in the winter.

    Arizona Chickens

Speaking of misters. I've always turned mine on once it reaches 103. My questions is. Why does the water turn my white birds brown? I have quail and a Royal Palm Turkey. She hangs with the chickens. But now she she looks so dirty and so do the quail. I've had this happen to the quail out in...

    How to keep quail manure.

If you live in the desert where the poop dries on impact (almost) how long before it breaks down so you can use it in gardens?
