my new rooster has something on his legs

Thank you all for the great advice. So it has been five days an I have bathed him twice, and applied Vick's vaporub every other day (that's what I had on hand). I have noticed a big improvement in his skin and the big deposits of white crust have started to slough off. Yay! So I will keep an eye...

my new rooster has something on his legs

Thank you for the diagnosis, I haven't ever seen scaly leg mites in person. Yes, he is a white Silkie rooster. I have him separated from the flock for a quarantine period, thank goodness! The rest of my birds are very healthy, no mites or lice or anything.

my new rooster has something on his legs

I got a new rooster from a neighbouring farmer today a noticed white crust all over his legs. At first I thought it was just feathers but I have washed him and it is actually his skin. It feels almost like a wart-type of rubbery skin. Any ideas what it could be?

Any ideas on what killed my hen?

That's what I thought too, about raccoons not being very strong, but I came across a lot of anecdotal evidence to the contrary. Here's one from this site : It kind of makes me wonder what I lengths I will have to do to raccoon proof my coop in the future! I hope you find your rooster soon...

Any ideas on what killed my hen?

I am so sorry to hear about your hen. I have heard that racoons can pull a chicken's head through the wires of a cage and bite it off. I have also heard that they are very good at getting locks and latches open. I have never seen it happen personally, but I am new to chicken keeping and have...

how to care for an orphaned baby goose?

It didn't make it, passed away early last night. I had a little cry for the poor thing and then spent some extra time with my chickens this morning. I think I will bury it beside my dog at the edge of our meadow. Thanks for your kind words. Maybe down the road I will try raising some ducks...

how to care for an orphaned baby goose?

Hi Miss Lydia, I am sorry to say it is not doing well. It hasn't eaten much today and I can get it to drink sips of water every now and then but it shows no interest in chick crumbs. I did everything the previous poster advised (except get more geese to keep it company). It is very lethargic...

how to care for an orphaned baby goose?

Hi there, I am a first time chicken mommy, I have 11 chicks that are 6 weeks old and have just moved them out to their new coop. My neighbour just dropped off a baby gosling ( think it's a wild Canada Goose) that he found abandoned in his back acreage and I was wondering how to care for it...

Hi All! I've been lurking and decided to sign up!

Hello, I am a first time chicken owner. I live near Ottawa, Ontario and I have 11 chicks that are 6 weeks old. I don't really know what kind they are as I ordered them from TSC as a "Hatch day special" but they are some kind of red breed, like a new hampshire or red sex-link. I look...
