Pip on smaller end of egg

We're at the end of day 19 and I just found a pipped egg about an hour ago. It's toward the small end of the egg, though...should I be worried. I've had zero success with my last two hatches (hatched one batch successfully before that). We just have a LG forced air incubator and had trouble...

How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

8 out of 9. The 9th is molting, though.

    Religious Chicken?

That's funny! Ours seem to lay less or not at all some Sundays. We have 9 laying and were joking that they take Sundays off as a "day of rest".

Introducing a roo to new girls

Is this wise? He's been in with the same four girls for about 3.5 months, but we'd like him to fertilize the eggs of our five girls from the other coop. Is he likely to just get picked on, or does being a rooster grant him any privileges in that respect? Any hints on doing this, if you think...

    Encouraging broodiness?

Thanks for the replies. We went ahead and put the eggs in the incubator yesterday since no one appears broody (even the older girls).

    Encouraging broodiness?

OK, newbie question here. I've hatched eggs once before, in an incubator. These were eggs I bought from someone else. Now my rooster is finally doing his thing and our eggs are fertile (checked some for the "bulls-eye" shape). We still have the incubator but would like to let one of the hens...

Okies in the BYC The Original

Our family will plan to attend the POOPS get-together. Two adults and four children for a grand total of six. I'll definitely bring some foods, but need to think about it a bit and decide exactly what. Wish list--Salmon Faverolle pullet or moderately young hen

    Egg laid in water

Today, one of our new layers laid her egg in the litter box we use as a wading pool for chickens. With the shells being porous, I assumed we shouldn't eat this egg. What do you think? Thanks.

eggs, what is important to you?

Until my girls recently started laying we were buying eggs from local people. Taste of the eggs and the diet fed to the hens were most important to me (still are!). I prefer knowing the eggs are from hens fed an organic diet and free-ranged as much as possible. Color and size are secondary...

When do they start to lay?

Our EE started between 22 and 23 weeks. We're in SW OK with a lot of heat (100's many days) so I was worried about that, too, but it doesn't seem to be bothering my girls so far.

Partridge markings...what kind of chicks can have these?

Maybe after our trip...heading out today. But she truly looks very similar to our RIR as I described above.

Getting Egg-Anxious!! How many to expect?

We have 2 Black Australorps who just started laying about two weeks ago. So far I'd say they are averaging about 5 eggs per week. I looked at that chart referenced above and it says Araucanas average two per week....I'm glad ours didn't read it because she has laid the past 9 days straight...

Partridge markings...what kind of chicks can have these?

I'm sorry but I have no pictures to go with this post...am packing for vacation. We have a pullet about 19-20 weeks old, purchased at Atwood's as a tiny chick. She had partridge markings as a chick and is now a beautiful red color with a bit of gold lacing (I believe that's the term) around...

    When to expect eggs?

We got our girls as day-old chicks in January, and they've been laying for about 2 weeks now (they are now 24 weeks old). The first to lay was a BO, followed by our Black Australorps and then the Araucana. I'm not sure if the Black Sex-link is laying but we think so. We have a second group...
