Mystery piece of flesh inside chicken

I'll have to ask my husband when I get a chance. He said all the other organs were accounted for. It's bizarre. Do chickens get cancer? She was a two-year-old layer. It makes me nervous about eating the meat.

Mystery piece of flesh inside chicken

my husband is calling this a tumor. It looks like mystery organ meat. Does anyone know what this is?? It is sliced in half

    Does soy make eggs/yolks smaller?

When we got our chickens we were using a soy-free feed. The egg yolks were huge! I thought it was the chicken breed. Got another breed laying, thought we lucked out again with a breed that made large yolks (I love yolks). Then my husband accidentally bought a feed with soy, and the eggs got...

Is $4/dozen pastured eggs to much? Suburban upstate, NY...

I would happily pay $4/ dozen for that kind of quality egg. Although I actually prefer soy-free and those are even more expensive. Most likely there are people looking for those organic pastured eggs and are looking on Craigslist for them, and willing to pay $4!

    Feeling squeamish about culling hen

This chicken is trying to save her neck! She's laid two days in a row now since I started this thread lol. I like what you said about it being empowering to do the deed. My hesitancy was in feeling like it was too early for her...she's trying to prove me right now by laying again, haha. As for...

    Feeling squeamish about culling hen

Yes, I feel like I need to be able to do this, too. In hindsight, I was thinking it would've been easier to do this first with a meat chicken. Those layers just feel like part of the family after a while--especially when they are so friendly and want to be petted every day.

    Most expensive eggs, ever!

So it's just a breed issue? We got them as young pullets last spring, they must be close to a year and a half old.

    Most expensive eggs, ever!

While that's a good point about the heat, it doesn't explain the lousy laying in the spring. They were laying better last fall, 2-3 a day--forgot to mention that. They were smaller eggs, though, that may be why. Anything I can do to encourage laying? Could it be the free-feeding? I think I've...

    Feeling squeamish about culling hen

One of our hens is super annoying. She "crows" (not like a rooster but is pretty loud) early in the morning and a few times throughout the day--and goes on for a while, complaining about who know what. She's a trouble-maker, picks through our berry nets, picks on the baby chicks, sneaks onto the...

    Most expensive eggs, ever!

Please help me, my hens are pigs and barely lay. We were giving them a really nice quality GMO-free, soy free feed, but have had to downgrade to a cheaper organic kind (that has soy). (I don't want to eat eggs or meat that has pesticides in them and want to limit our soy exposure.) They already...

    Chicks just hatched--need feeding advice!

Okay, I think we can figure this out. Thanks again!

    Chicks just hatched--need feeding advice!

Thank you chickencanoe. Any ideas on how to separate them from the other hens?

    Chicks just hatched--need feeding advice!

Our hen just hatched her chicks and we realized we are not prepared! We hadn't bought chick feed yet, and it's the 4th of July so the feed stores are closed! I imagine they will want to eat today?? Should we crumble some layer feed for them for now? Where should we put the food/water so they can...

Official BYC Poll: Why Do You Have Chickens - Select All That Apply

Hard to find soy free, GMO free, pastured eggs. I like having control over the quality. Also to be more self-sufficient.

    Are my eggs still alive?

Thanks for the feeding tip. Yeah it's been a long time!! These eggs would have only just gotten started last night, so I don't think we could candle them yet? I guess we'll check in a couple days.

    Are my eggs still alive?

We've had a broody hen for two months now, so finally got some fertile eggs for her to hatch from a nearby farm yesterday. She was on them yesterday and last night, but this afternoon my husband discovered she had switched nests to the one another hen had laid an egg in, so the fertile eggs got...
