Hatchery vs breeder chickens -- life span difference?

So I just came back in from the barn, where I was sitting with my second Faverolle who will likely die in the next 24 hours from some unknown cause. My other one had to be put down a month ago due to complications from a kidney tumor. They are/were only 2. In my previous flock, the longest-lived...

    Is this coryza?

Just to finish out the thread, unfortunately the Benadryl didn't really do anything for her. The swelling has mostly subsided now, apparently on its own. Based on some posts on the BYC Facebook page, it looks like some kind of sinus problem is hitting a lot of people's birds this summer. Wonder...

    Is this coryza?

Thank you, Kathy. That dosage table is fascinating! The prednisilone didn't do anything for the swelling, regardless, so I didn't give her any more. Depending how she looks when I go to put everyone in later I will try the Benadryl. She's still in decent spirits and happily took a dustbath...

    Is this coryza?

Thanks, Eggcessive, I will try that. I gave her 2.5 mg of prednisilone this afternoon to see if that might help with the swelling but unfortunately there was no change. The comb swelled up before her face did so maybe she was stung by something there? It looks so uncomfortable!

    Is this coryza?

Poor girl's face and comb are so swollen it looks like she'll pop. One eye had white foamy discharge this morning but not this afternoon. There is no horrible scent coming from her nostrils and her breathing sounds normal, which is making me question a coryza diagnosis but the swelling sure...

Cold feet! Only you guys would understand this

Wow, that's cool! And good to know about.

Cold feet! Only you guys would understand this

If there's snow, it definitely gets shoveled before they go out -- they wouldn't have it any other way. This was a bit of frost that would melt away as soon as the sun rose more.

Cold feet! Only you guys would understand this

Hi! Here's an article from Stanford U about bird thermoregulation that does a better job than I could do. https://web.stanford.edu/group/stanfordbirds/text/essays/Temperature_Regulation.html. It's pretty neat. And NorthFLChick, the boot picture is priceless!

Cold feet! Only you guys would understand this

So we're finally getting January weather where I live, and this morning there's quite a hoarfrost on everything. I let the girls out, intending to put them in the tractor when I finished my chores. I was about to herd them in when I noticed one, my GLW, sit down suddenly. She looked at me and...

How You Know You're Raising Your Child Right

My son and I were doing a phonics book together; the focus was on the short "e" sound. One of the pictures was of a chicken, with the correct matching word being "hen". DS points to it and says "rooster" immediately (he can't read "hen" yet). I looked at the photo. Yup, it was of a rooster. :)...

    Cures for the molting blues?

I have a 14-month-old Faverolle who is molting hard and seems to be feeling pretty lousy while doing so. She won't come out of the coop unless I bring her out and she is barely eating. I've been giving supplemental protein like BOSS, flock raiser, yogurt, scrambled eggs, meat scraps, mealworms...

Talk to me about bantam roosters with standard hens!

Thank you, everyone, for your thoughts! I'm thinking this may be the way to go eventually -- plus bantams are so darn cute! And now I have a reason to start lobbying for a Cochin. :D

Talk to me about bantam roosters with standard hens!

We had to re-home our rooster several months ago because our flock was just too small and three of the ladies in particular were getting rather torn up. I don't regret moving him at all since his new home is Rooster Nirvana -- he has a flock of 30 ladies now -- but I do miss the protection and...

Rooster suddenly being aggressive to hens?

Hi Guppy, Thank you so much -- your thoughts really helped. I tried a reintroduction in the barn aisle this morning and the hens were just too terrified of him. He tried to go after the one he pulled off the roost and I got between them before anything could happen. I was better able to see...

Rooster suddenly being aggressive to hens?

Thanks, folks, for the replies. I've been pretty consistent about being top rooster with him ever since we discovered he was a he (and not the she he was supposed to have been...): picking him up and carrying him around, picking up the hens in his presence, no mating anyone when I am there, etc...

Rooster suddenly being aggressive to hens?

My eight-month-old rooster was a right jerk to the girls tonight, seemingly out of nowhere. When the hens were heading into the coop for the night, he started laying into them: pecking at their feet as they tried to hop down into the coop, grabbing their heads and biting hard and being a total...

    my first "lash egg" experience

My hybrids laid these crazy things too, and all but one died from egg yolk peritonitis. They made it to between 3 and 3.5 years old and each laid probably somewhere over 750 eggs in their lives (starting at 16 weeks!). I would dissect these lash eggs too to see what on earth they were but to me...

Does mating ever get less brutal looking?

Thank you, all of this is very helpful. I figured they all have a learning curve but wasn't sure what the end result was going to look like. This is my first rooster so this aspect of chicken keeping is new to me. Luckily he's a sweet boy and a good roo so far, so I'm hopeful he'll be a...
