Rooster swollen red legs - limping

There are no mites on him now, there were LOTS when this started so I wondered if mites infected his legs somehow? Thanks for the advice on trimming his spurs, I didn't even know that was something that could be done. Ill be trying it for the first time later today. His spurs are much lower...

Rooster swollen red legs - limping

I have checked for bumblefoot and I don't see any issue. The roosting bar is less than 2 feet high. He is eating the layer feed same as the hens which I know isn't ideal but I wouldn't expect this problem from feed.

Rooster swollen red legs - limping

Hi, I have a two-year-old rooster with red blisters (lumps) on his legs, and I hope someone can help me diagnose. His right leg is more swollen/red than the left, and he limps when he walks, and is a little unstable when he does walk, but these days he sits a fair bit. The joint is squishy, so...

Do weak male chicks grow up to be runt roosters? will they make smaller chickens?

He did pip a little lower in the egg but even when he couldn't walk right he was a fighter, lots of spirit. Issue is that my rooster is 5.5 years old and isn't doing well and this guy was the only rooster I got from the 7 that hatched. I'm thinking I will keep him until next spring and see...

Do weak male chicks grow up to be runt roosters? will they make smaller chickens?

In the spring I had a chick that was ~30hrs trying to get out of his shell and, for only the 3rd time in 9 years, because we were in Covid lock down, I assisted the chick out of the shell. He hatched ok but he was SO weak! He couldn't stand for the first 4 days, I had to hand feed/water him...

    Should I get a rooster?

I had hens only for 4 years and for the last 5 I have had "Sir". The behavior of the flock has greatly improved and we lost 11 hens in the first 4 years and 3 in the last 5 because he either rushes them to safety or makes so much noise I come running. Also there are less fighting among the...

Every time I think its a male but hold out hoping its going to be a female, it turns out to be a male.... but not harm waiting. I live on 3 acres in a hamlet I figured for sure someone would complain about my rooster but 5 years later nobody has

Trying to add new young rooster into Fathers flock

Thanks for the comments I was afraid this was only going to get worst.... and it sounds like I shouldn't hold this behavior against him. Unfortunately I don't have space to separate them full time so for now I'm letting the old guy and his hens roam the property and the young one with his hens...

Trying to add new young rooster into Fathers flock

Hi, I have an 5.5 yr old rooster and I'm thinking of replacing him because he is getting weak and loses his balance often. Today he fell off the ramp onto his side on the ground below. Also this spring of the 28 eggs that I put into an incubator 8 were fertilized. I have added one of his...

Neurologic symptoms in 5yr old rooster

Hi, I was searching for rooster issues when I came across this thread. My rooster is also 5.5 years old and is going through almost all the same things. He stumbles often, more if he has to go up or down stairs, or bend over to eat and had a hard time keeping his balance and his wings drop...

    Dog attacked my hen

Im not sure about peroxide but I have used polysporin on chickens without issue, but not sure if thats "chicken approved" . I would move her to a quiet spot and let her calm down by herself. I had a fox that attacked one of our hens and it was still alive but after 1.5 days of not walking I...

    Droopy wing, old hen

I just posted a question about my rooster with similar issues as your hen. He also has dropped wings and sometimes sleeps on the floor of the coop because he can't keep his balance on the roosting bar any more, I've witnessed him fall off the bar and land on his side. I will be following your...

5 year old rooster losing balance.

Hi, I have a rooster that just turned 5 years old this past spring and I just noticed he has been having a hard time standing up, putting his head down, and roosting at night. He seems to be able to stand, and he can run if needed, but mostly when he bends down to eat he loses his balance and...

My first batch of chicks. I lost one.

I lose a few chicks in several hatches, as others have said its not unusual. They normally just get weak and then die in a day or two. Developing 100% correctly in an egg is a difficult job for a chick.
