showing with a broken wing feather

I am going through birds to decide what to send to a poultry show. One bird is really nice in every way but some of its wing feathers are snapped about three fourths of the way up. Is it even worth entering a bird with that defect?

    Disqualification or fault?????

Thanks for your reply. I am confused as to why the level of competition would matter. You would think that a DQ would be a DQ at any level?

    Disqualification or fault?????

I have three questions. 1. Is split wing a DQ or is it a fault with points taken off? 2. Is slipped wing a DQ or is it a Fault? 3. Is a twisted feather a DQ or a Fault? I raise silkies but I am thinking the answer would be the same for all breeds of chicken.

    Minnesota breeders information?

Hi, I think that my chickens have great temperments! Prices start at $11 for newborn chicks and then increase with age. Call or text 612-756-1414 and I would be happy to help you get some silkie chicks.

    Silkie breeding, genetics & showing

Thanks. I have one rooster weighing in at 44 oz and another at 50 oz. Too big, which is depressing as they are really only barely a year old. My hen is 36 oz.

    Silkie breeding, genetics & showing

Thanks for responding. I am wondering if those weights are for the UK. They have different requirement than the US does. I looked at the site and it did not look like a US website.

    Silkie breeding, genetics & showing

I have a question about weights of silkies for showing. I just weighed a white silkie rooster that I was planning on showing and he weighed 2 lbs 12 oz. That would be 44 oz which I believe is too heavy. What are the correct silkie weights for showing?

Need a new incubator: what should I be looking for

I agree. I think that the Hovabator 1583 is the best. It is the same as the 1588 but just doesn't have everything digital. It is a little more hands on. I love mine.

    Trouble getting temp right

I would say to leave it at 100 degrees. It might delay development a little but 102 is too high.

    Showing Poultry in 4H

My understanding would be no mixed colors. The colors should be pure. There is a standard for each color of the breed.

    Winter water?

I just bought a Harris Farm Heated water base for a 2 gallon galvanized waterer. I found the that the water is extremely warm when using it.. Almost like bath water. I don't think that is good for the chickens to have such warm water. Also they must be spilling some because the bedding around...

    Hatching Vertically

Has anyone left their eggs vertical when they went into lockdown?. I have a brinsea octagon econ and I want to try to leave the eggs up and down instead of laying them on their sides on day 18. In the past I have had chicks die because they end up facedown when zipping around and they can't...

do silkies make good adition to a flock

I think that silkies are a great addition to any flock. It would be ideal if they were all raised together from chicks, but I have had good experiences with established flocks adding silkies. All chickens have different personalities. Some are just more aggressive than others. Just make sure you...

    Do Silkies Roost

A silkie should always have a buddy to sleep with. They do not like to roost and cannot fly up to roosts that are high. When younger they like a low roost to perch on. I always recommend at least two silkies together to keep each other warm in the winter.

Young Silkie (10 wks) "mothering" baby chick--does that mean probably female?

It is probably a female at 10 weeks. By 10 weeks the silkie roos are interested in play fighting and doing boy things. Females would be more mothering. But, never say never when talking about silkies. You could just have a very nurturing boy. These are young cockerels.
