What kills and eats the back area?

Something attacked our small flock of 8 hens around dusk. 3 were dead with the back area eaten out (one found inside the hen house). The others had been attacked and wounded all around the tail and back area???? I think it happened within an hour window of dusk. Any ideas???? Thanks

How do I get my turkeys to go in shelter at night?

This is my first experience with turkeys and they will not go into their shelter at night (10x10 building with roost built in). There are 4 BB white and 5 Bourbon Reds and a couple of the BR's will roost in a small tree in their pen and the remainder huddle on the ground nearby. I have tried...

Does a cone work and is everything pretty much the same as a chicken? Thanks,

    S&G/Mt. Healthy Dixie Rainbows etc...

This post was from almost two years ago but thought I would update since the Dixies are now being offered through Mt. Healthy. I believe S&G has dropped Reds and Grays (or mixed everything together as Rainbows). We will raise more this summer as my wife prefers these over the CX- prettier and...

    Hatchery in mid-south?

Does anyone know of a hatchery in the mid-south for turkeys (3-4 hour drive centered around middle TN)? I would like to try some for the first time but would also like to pick them up from the hatchery- probably a few different heritage breeds totaling no more than 15 turkeys. Any help would...

    Need help, wife wants Turkeys!

My wife wants to start a self sustaining flock and I would prefer something for meat only if we get any. Hence, she is wanting heritage and me probably a "one and done" broad breasted variety. Any help would be appreciated and I have a few specific questions. What breed do you prefer? and...

    All kinds of turkey questions

I am planning on raising some turkeys for meat next year for the first time so have a lot of questions for you folks that have some experience if you would please share. What breed do you prefer? and which hatchery do you prefer? How long to grow out to a 12-15 pound dressed bird? At what age...

    Feeder question of the day

Does anyone have a good feeder design that prevents waste? The open designs are good for self feeding but tend to allow a lot of waste. Most of the commercial feeders I have seen have dividers that do not allow the rascals to "flip" the food and waste it. I just wondered if anyone has a good...

This is an old Pilling Caponizing Set with the original manual. Not sure of age but could be antique. I can sent photos if interested.

    Feed recipe for Meatie's?

For you folks that have your feed custom blended for meaties, does anyone want to share some wisdom in recipes they have developed for higher protein feeds? Also any do's or do not's like not too much of something- for example I have read that fish meal is a good protein booster but too much...

How do the Rangers handle cold weather?

Can anyone with experience on these birds tell me how they handle the cooler weather? I will not be able to try them until mid-September and would prefer to keep in a tractor (with a heat lamp) but am afraid it will be too cold by the time to process. Will it slow the growth on these? Any...

Is ascites due to growing conditions or bird genetics?

Anyone know much about this? I lost several meat birds this year that never grew much and apparently had this. I discovered this when processing and found 4-5 others full of fluid. Anyone know if these are same to eat? Have not had this problem in past years so am curious as to why now.

    Hatchery recommendation for X

I am looking for a hatchery recommendation for X from folks that have had a long term relationship ( 4 or 5 years minimum) with their hatchery. I have tried different ones but have mixed reviews. I am told that none of them produce their own eggs for X but buy from the large commercial...

Cornish Rock X- What %feed and how much?

Anyone like to share what %protein they feed their birds, how much and what method? I have always fed around 16% around the clock in past years with no issues. I actually tried hatchery recommendation of 23% to four weeks and 20% afterwards but am being told this is too high and defenitely not...

    Mt. Healthy Rock Cornish X

    Rock Cornish Mortality

I am new to BYC but this is a great forum! I have raised Rock Cornish X for several years now but am experiencing a higher than normal mortality rate (>25% so far). The birds came from Mt. Healthy as I had good luck with them last year. At around 4 weeks, some of the birds just started...
