Broody adopting 4-week-old chicks - question about heat

I have the same question--my broody hatched 5 chicks 5 days ago and I just ordered 3 day old chicks due to arrive in a week (with hopes that mom will take the new ones in to raise). Do you all think it will be ok to just slip them into the coop with mom at night when they arrive? It would be 5...

    Broody Hen Thread!

Not sure what happened-- I don't have a roo, so I got 5 eggs (likely fertile) from feed store and set her the same day they were laid. Set up in a nice broody coop inside the tractor. Broody rarely got up off her eggs, but saw her several times out for a few minutes at a time. She kicked one...

    Broody Hen Thread!

i just stumbled on this info with the answer to my question (which was, can I let my broody sit for 2 cycles). Thanks for the info--I didn't think that would be healthy for her. But have another question... my broody just completed a 25 day sit with no hatchlings :( This is her first time and...

    new broody hatching eggs

I just got 5 fertile eggs to put under my newly broody hen. A couple of questions: Can I move her to a bigger, separate area? Will she be ok all alone in a private apartment/run? It's only been a few days and my nest box is very small, though she seems very comfortable. Just thinking...

    need a few hatching eggs

I have a small (5) flock of laying hens. They are 1 year this month and one has just suddenly gone broody. I have no rooster and think I'd like to put some fertilized eggs under her. No preference on breed, but would like a white egg since I don't have any. I'll take any kind of fertilized...

40 weeks old - no egg yet

I AM going to contact them. Frankly, I'm just glad to get an egg at all -- and glad I didn't end up with a ROOSTER. I was beginning to seriously wonder.... 44 weeks to lay?! And, she's SO weird. I mean, we call her our "special" chick behind her back. And not in a good way

    Puppy with Chickens!

If I weren't so technically challenged I'd post the cutest video of my new puppy playing FETCH with chickens! I'm so thrilled that Willow (3 mo old pup) is getting along with my flock of 5 hens! Chickens have never been out of their run, but since I put up a fence (mainly for the puppy) I can...

40 weeks old - no egg yet

FINALLY, at 44 weeks my ameraucana started laying. But not happy because eggs look just like the olive egger - very green, not blue. (the smaller egg shown here is the ameraucana's) I had an easter egger that laid a much bluer egg than this. Bought at meyer hatchery for $20. So even though...

40 weeks old - no egg yet

Never has laid, not one single egg. It's easy to tell, as I only have 5 and I know their egg colors. The run is too small to really hide, and I check everywhere. They are only in a mobile tractor when outside of the run and I check that as well. She has been squatting for several months. I...

40 weeks old - no egg yet

And the olive egger quit laying for a couple of months, at the beginning of winter. But she's started back all of a sudden, bigger eggs than ever and nearly every day or every other.

40 weeks old - no egg yet

believe me, I've wondered if I even have a HEN! LOL, but she's lowest on the pecking order and squats all the time. She is so beautiful, the other girls are just jealous of her!

40 weeks old - no egg yet

I guess it's a winter time thing... but blue ameracauna STILL hasn't laid an egg at 40 weeks. Olive egger laid at 23 weeks. All the others are laying daily. What the heck? Is this normal? Will I have to wait until spring?

found one hen dead this a.m. - mysterious?

Have a flock of 6 laying hens - about 30 weeks old. They have been fine, no sign of illness. Last nite apparently, inside the run (I keep coop door cracked open) and run is totally enclosed including roof--no sign of any predator entry at all-- my silver laced Wyandotte was found early this...

BLue Ameracauna hasn't laid! 29 weeks now

My six are all same age (29 weeks now) First one (red sex link) laid at 18 weeks! Easter egger laid an olive egg at 23 weeks.... all breeds have laid prior to 23 weeks except my blue ameracauna. WHEN will she lay? I now have a dark brown egg, light brown, 2 light pink, a green -- I want a...

    oyster shell supplement

Well, my hens have been laying for a little over 3 months. Their eggshells have been really super hard all along. I realized that their layer feed contains extra calcium, so wonder if I even need to provide oyster shell? Their bin ran out so I waited a few days before re-filling (found a...

    "broken eggs"

I think you need to give calcium supplement (ground oyster shell or ground eggshell, or at minimum in their feed) -- grit (sand, pebbles) are a necessary supplement but it's the calcium supplement that makes the shells hard and less likely to break.

    7 eggs!

LOL! Sorry, but yes that is kinda funny. I can laugh because the opposite happened to me yesterday... I only have 5 hens and get 4 to 5 eggs each and every day.... until yesterday and there were NONE. Husband thought we had someone stealing from us! He was pretty upset. I knew no one was...

    let my chickens in yard

We've always done that too--- just let them run around the yard outside their run for a period just before dusk, depending on how much time we have to be out with them (we don't leave them out alone free range for long periods) maybe an hour before dusk. they ALWAYS go to roost by themselves...

Welsummer STILL hasn't laid at 30 weeks
