Thanks Iomine - I am looking forward to quail for dinner tonight :)
I think your idea of doing all the heads first is a great idea.. the twitching really unnerved me - I didn't like it at all.
Thanks for your post - so glad I read it prior to "doing" the first of our quails last night.
I must admit i did get hubby to do the first bit (removing the head), and he did most of the rest too for that matter. I did do one though, and it scared the c#@p out of me when I was holding the bird...
19 babies out of 24 eggs.. pretty stoked for a first time trying.
not bad for a home made incubator from a polystyrene box, with holes to moderate humidity. Hand rolled them 3 times a day prior to lockdown. all happy now in their brooder :)
so - 8 babies now (things happened while I was at work today) so exciting.
I know they will be fine for a day or so without food - but not sure, do I need to put some water in for them?
cheers
Leone
I will post another pic in a week or so - if/when I can get a decent one - sneeky little sucker is hard to photograph. Thanks for all the comments, heres fingers crossed to a pullet :)
I noticed today that 2 of my 14 week old chicks had a closed eye. On closer inspection, it was almost like they had sleep in their eye, sort of stuck down with kak..
any ideas as to what it might be, and how to fix it.
in advance - thanks
well that's easier said than done... I tried to get a some more pics, let me know if any of these are any more conclusive (to having pullets, instead of cockerels)lol
HI all,
So, my chickens are now 10 weeks old and I still have NO idea at all if they are boys or girls, I was hoping with a few pictures, someone might be able to help. I know I have at least one boy as he is starting to crow (sounds a bit like a cat lol) but I seem to miss it every morning...
so - I have 4 laying cooks (1 buff leghorn, 1 columbian wyandotte and 2 gold laced wyandotte's) and 8 x 8 week old chickens that I hatched (incubated)
If I check several times a day for eggs, I get between 3 and 4 eggs every day, so I am thinking my 4 layers are all laying (they are about 10...
thought I would share a couple of pics of my 2 week old chicks - note the one in the first pic, he/she hatched a day before the others. My first instinct was that it was a girl as the wing feathers seemed to indicate it (not that I would know..) as you can see, the tail feathers are about 2"...
