I bred my bearded white dominant roo silkie with my black bearded bow-tie showgirl hen. The chicks are all splash/painted. Cute either way!
Question:. The chicks do not appear to be bearded? Why is that?
I like the taste of the BBW that I raised 2yrs ago, so I bought some more this year. Question: approx. how much weight is there to a 10 week old? 13 week old?
Reason for asking is we don't want a 17-20lb turkey. Just a small one like I read the Midget Whites can be (10-12lbs approx.)...
Perfect topic for me today! We have been under a State of Emergency due to the "Polar Vortex". Windchill's down to -30 degrees this past week! I love my ducks, but getting to them in several feet of snow, down the hill, to shovel out their door, is a bit much! I "USED" to give them lettuce...
Has anyone HERE tried to incubate a fertile shell-less egg? I thought about giving it a try. The whole "pip & zip" wouldn't happen, exactly, right?
My 4yr Showgirl Silkie laid it, and all her eggs have been fertile, so I thought about trying to incubate this one. Would that be cruel...
I'VE READ ON METZER FARMS SITE THAT 17HRS DAYLIGHT FOR OPTIMAL EGG LAYING. ALL MY GIRLS ARE LAYING EVERYDAY WITH 9HRS OF DAYLIGHT, NO ARTIFICIAL LIGHT. WHOAH AND WOW! THEY EGGS HAVE BEEN FERTILE. DON'T KNOW WHEN THEY ARE "FOOLING AROUND" AS I HAVE THEM LOCKED UP MOST DAYS SINCE WE'RE HEADING...
I raised some broilers last year, and had them vacuum sealed. Pulled them out this year, they are delicious!
The other day, I had thawed one out to cook. Something came up, so put it back in fridge. Didnt get to it for couple days, so put it back in freezer unsure if THAT was safe. This...
Hi!
I have recently read that duck eggs get bigger as they get older. I'm a bit concerned about that, because my ducks are already laying (at least 1 of the 2) 100-110g eggs and she's only 6 1/2mths old.
I'm new-ish to raising ducks in that the only other flock I had were khaki's and they...
My girls finally started laying in a nest THEY built in the enclosed portion of our duck coop. Prior to that, they had been laying IN the water dish.
So, my question is this: does anybody have experience with WHITE LAYER DUCKS (from MPC via Metzer Farms) that they will go broody?
Perhaps...
Thought it would be cool, if backyardchickens had an annual "Meet and Greet with Your Cheep" for all members to show up at an actual physical place. How cool would THAT be? Maybe do a egg/chicken/duck/turkey etc, swap!
What are the possibilities: black bearded bow tie showgirl silkie hen x blue bearded silkie rooster?
Hoping for a bearded bow tie showgirl, color not so important.
Have a black bearded bow tie showgirl silkie someone GAVE us 4 yrs ago. Little did I know how much I was going to fall in love with her. I !now have a black silkie roo to mate with her, but he doesn't want anything to do with her only every OTHER chicken on the playing field. I penned him up...
Would like a smaller size turkey. We raised the BBW's before, and they reached 20+ lbs in 4 months. We don't need them that big. Can we butcher at 2 1/2 - 3 mths old and just get less meat? Only really want about a 10-13 lb turkey. Will that be okay to butcher them earlier than the 4mths?
I have an assortment of chickens. One of they them lays an egg everyday, and it is 82-91g - NEVER a double yoker. How can I tell which one it is? Is that even possible to figure out? It is a medium brown color egg, and here are the possible brown egg sources:
2 Naked neck Turken
3 Buff...
Okay, what gives? I incubated 2 eggs, and they both hatched within 8 hours of pipping, 2 days before hatch date. I was expecting this to be hard, and it was too easy.
I thought turkey eggs were hard to hatch or at least harder than chicken eggs.
I noticed some time ago that my Partridge Chantecler has white earlobes. Well, that's not right, they should be red. Thinking I'm mixing her up in my mind with some other breed, I scanned my mental files, and thought, no, that IS my Partridge Chantecler. For one thing, she has virtually no...
Okay, so it's chick season in our household. Time to get a couple of chicks. Tractor Supply says so, Family Farm and Home says so, not to mention chick hatcheries with all their "New 2018 Breeds" saying it's so as well. Soooooo, I told myself, no more than 4, or well, 10. Yeah, 10 is a nice...
I have had some chickens, all were heavier breeds, that ended up with bumble foot. One girl actually plucked out her own bumble foot "kernel" while at the Vets. She was a Bielefelder who was towards the end of her laying years - putting out XXL eggs (105g). That was a few years ago when...
I found a thread that mentions the egg size (medium), but elsewhere, it's saying they lay large eggs. Who actually has some mature laying hens, and what is the weight of the eggs, preferably in ounces or grams, please!
