Start of fowl pox or I'm just a hypochondriac

Really the only "symptom" has been a decrease across the whole flock that I had posted about before but since then they have kinda started laying again about 3 eggs every couple of days. The kids think I'm just being a hypochondriac but figured I'd seek thoughts.

    They all stopped laying

Until September 7th we were averaging about 15 eggs out of our 17 gals. We've got Red Comets, Barred Rocks, Black Star, Welsummer, BO, and a few Red Stars/Buff Comets etc. A fairly hardy egg producing flock. Then September 7th our Silkie passed due to our failure to put her back in the coop and...

    Roost bar question?

Can ya'lls help settle a dispute we're having? Should a roost bar of a 2x4 be with the 4" or the 2" up being where the chicks sit? I read somewhere that going 2x4 w/ the 4" being the best way as the chicken's feet aren't meant to grab something small like the 2x2 for long periods plus it...

    Interesting egg coloring

Pretty sure this egg came from one of our Rhode Island gals. But since I'm still wet behind the ears in this chicken loving adventure and our gals only just started laying 2 weeks ago I'm intrigued by this egg. Causes? Should I be concerned? Her system just working out the kinks?

    Egg laid on coop floor

Two of our gals laid on the floor of their coop. (Going to get some wooden eggs this friday) Anyways this afternoon heard the 2 gals singing their song but I didn't want to go hunt them down and disturb them. When they were done, I waited an additional 10 minutes before I went on the hunt. (I'm...

    Nesting boxes.. Inside vs. Outside

Does it really matter to a chicken if their nesting boxes are inside the coop or outside as long as it provides shelter from the elements and gives them a nice place to lay? We're behind on the boxes and since the girls are taken to laying in the ivy in the fenced off bike area, it got me to...

    Would these work for now?

A lot has happened the past couple of months leaving us with incredible limited funds which has effected the finishing of the coop. Times flown by and here I am with the girls singing their egg song so it's a matter of time faster than a paycheck coming. Anyways found these guys that never got...

    Layena vs Start n' Grow

Does it really make that much of a difference when the Purina Layena pellets are fed? Hubs picked up the wrong bag, opened and filled the feeders this morning. The gals are 16 weeks old. I said it doesn't but our teen is worried as she's become their mother. Unfortunately her continued texts to...

3 weeks old still no feathers

my daughter rescued this BSL from the local grange almost 3 weeks ago. She had no down and was on the verge of death. She's thriving now, even has been asserting herself against one of the 5 week old BR who has self claimed dominant status the past couple of days. Anyways my question is will...

the gals turned 5 weeks today &

they moved to their own space yesterday!! couldn't be happier as the dust from their brooder was taking over my house and driving me batty. They've done 24 hrs in their semi finished coop but seem to be loving it. We still have lots to do on the coop like lay down linoleum on the floor, put...

11 Day Old Chick, Mimics Chirping Motion But No Sound

I know there's an answer somewhere but maybe because I'm trying to work on a deadline for work and help this baby chick I can't seem to find it. Have an 11 day old Plymouth Rock that we've had since hatching and was sent to us. Was doing fine about 5 hrs ago when I cleaned out the brooder. I...

Introducing new chicks to current set of chicks

My oldest wants to replace the chicks we lost last week. Feed store has a new batch that are almost the same age as the ones we have now give or take a day or two, so about 10 days old. What's the best way to bring in 2 new gals to the group?

Rethinking the use of Dry Den

We use dry den for our buns. I love every little thing about it, so I choose to use it with the chickens. However I have found that for the past 3 days, their toes get covered in poop. Which I then sit on the floor next to the brooder with a hot tub of water and give them pedicures about 2 or 3...

Help with figuring out breeds, please?

I thought I could tell them apart but I keep getting them confused. Mind helping me out a little? We ordered: New Hampshire (Red), Red Star, Welsummer, Rhode Island A. B. C. D.

    We lost one

I was mentally prepared to pick them up from the post office yesterday and have a couple not make it. So I was pleasantly surprised to see that they were all chirping, running around, and being loving. Not a single sign of any of them not making it. Then around 2100 one of the RIRs was very...

Wasn't as prepared as I thought

So I thought I was ready for the babies to arrive today. I've been reading and reading and reading. Sadly here I sit on the floor next to the brooder and worrying about them. Worrying that the heat is right, is the thermometer reading wrong, why are some laying down, why are some being bossy...

    Tidy Cats Pure Naturals

I ran into an acquaintance and we were discussing my kids brooder that we're setting up this weekend. She mentioned that she uses Tidy Cats Pure Naturals with her chicks. Conversation ended, off I went, came home and here I am now pondering if this stuff is really a good alternative to Sweet...

    Heat Lamp vs. EcoGlow 20

Our babies are due to arrive in 20 days give or take! As I'm prepping for our brooder setup, I'm trying to keep the cost down as much as possible on the brooder, since we are in the "city" of our little town and don't plan to breed or keep adding unless something is to happen down the road...
